  • Cuomo Touts New Wage Increase for Tipped Workers, But Quietly Excludes Largest Segment of Them
New York State announced last week that it will phase out the use of a subminimum wage for about 70,000 tipped workers by the end of 2020. The change will apply to people working in "miscellaneous" service industries, like nail and hair salons, dog groomers, doormen, but it will not apply to the largest segment of tipped workers--waiters, bartenders, and bussers.
The decision to quietly exclude restaurant workers from the wage raise comes after massive pressure from a conservative advocacy group funded by restaurant owners.
For more, we speak with Mohini Sharma, lead organizer for Metro Justice and a former tipped worker, who participated in the One Fair Wage campaign to end New York State's subminimum wage.

  • Report Finds US Gov't Spent $1B On Charter Schools That Either Closed Or Never Opened
A new report finds that the federal government's Charter Schools Program (CSP) has spent a billion dollars over the last decade on schools that have either closed down or that never opened in the first place. Those schools account for about 37% of those to receive funding from the CSP, according to analysis from the Network for Public Education.
Reporter Jason Taylor spoke with Carol Burris of the Network for Public Education about the report, "Still Asleep at the Wheel."

  • "These Cuts Are International": Puerto Rican RCSD Students Twice-Harmed By Cuts to Public Education
On Thursday December 20th, members of the Puerto Rican Independence Party gathered at the Administrative Offices of the Rochester City School District to protest proposed cuts to RCSD staff.
We spoke with one of the organizers of that protest about the international character of austerity and solidarity, and about how Puerto Rican students in Rochester have been doubly harmed by cuts to public education.
Paul Figueroa is the former coordinator of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) in Rochester. He did his student teaching in the RCSD, and he currently teaches 7th and 10th grade in San Juan. He's running for San Juan City Council as a member of PIP.
He spoke with WXIR's Darien Lamen ahead of the Rochester School Board's vote approving mid-year cuts to 155 positions.
