One of the more under-appreciated aspects of Jimmy Carter's political acumen is the savvy, groundbreaking campaign strategy he and his team put together that ultimately won them the 1976 election. On this episode of Recollecting Carter, I talk with Dr. Amber Roessner about her recent book Jimmy Carter and the Birth of the Marathon Media Campaign. It shows how Carter used image craft and showbiz politics to fuel his unlikely rise.

One of my favorite things about making this podcast has been learning about President Carter not just from historians and scholars, but hearing stories from people who were there when history happened. On this episode of Recollecting Carter we'll hear how a high school drum major came to be on the platform when Carter gave his victory speech after the 1976 election, and what it was like to march in that inaugural parade.

Though once remembered as "a good man but not a great president," there is a growing consensus among historians today that our collective memory of Carter needs to be "re-collected."
