In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I talk about the steps we can take to reconnect with joy.
Main Topics Discussed:
In our fast-paced world, even the most centered of minds can get swept up by the hustle and bustle of life. When we catch ourselves in this rut where we feel disconnected from our purpose and passion, it’s time to slow down and make our way back to the things that bring us joy.
You can’t leap into joy when you’re feeling disconnected; but, you can definitely crawl your way across, slowly but surely.
What about the things you love?
We can get so caught up in the many problems this world gives us and the people around us.
From climate change to the recession to geopolitical conflicts to a scarcity of opportunities… it’s too easy to drown in all of it.
Here’s a quick “hack”, if you will, to instantly light your way forward out of that rut. Ask yourself:
“What about the things I love?”
There is no shortage of problems to focus on in this world. But we also have the choice of where to put that focus on.
Choose to focus on what is going right in your life.
Some may call it “escapism”—that you’d be running away from your problems. But, if you really think about it, what other way is there to live?
If we’re going to muster up the energy to move through life, we have to focus on the things we love—the things that bring us joy.
Joy is the fuel that drives us forward in life.
Negativity empties that fuel tank.
In a society that is so fixated on bad news, it’s easy to forget that there is so much that is right with the world.
The hardest part is getting started—breaking through that inertia. That initial burst of energy needed to make that shift is probably the most you’ll have to give.
But as soon as you climb onto that first rung of the ladder, focusing on just one, small thing that gives you joy, trust me when I say that the momentum that follows is exponential.
Slow down, be still, and be present.
Joy is a felt experience, not a thought experience.
That’s why joy evokes such strong, happy memories. And the only way we can tap into that amazing, sensory state is by putting everything aside and just being in your body.
I encourage you to write down a list of the things that bring you joy as you sit in silence, covering each of the five senses.
What about your children’s hugs give you joy?
What does the sound of your favorite music do to give you joy?
How does the distant sunrise make you feel inside to give you joy?
What is it about the smell of coffee in the morning that gives you joy?
What do you specifically love in the flavor and texture of your favorite dessert, which gives you joy?
Keep adding to your list. You can never have enough joy in this life.
