Regularly we look at the Book Of Jonah and think it's about a prophet and his rebellion against God. This is partially true. It's a reflection on us all, where we also rebel against God. However, the real story of this book is God's sovereignty. Even though Jonah rebels, he still carries out God's will, and in this case, God's will is to save the very people that Jonah holds immense hatred to.

The question for us is, who are we to say who God can save?

The final chapter in Part III of our series details a pretty wild

conclusion to the first missionary journey. In Iconium, the city is

divided and a plot is formed to stone Paul and Barnabas. In Lystra,

Paul is first mistaken for Hermes and nearly worshipped, then

stoned and left for dead in the street. In Derbe, they make many

disciples - and then, remarkably, turn around and go back through

every city that tried to kill them, strengthening the churches and

appointing elders.

The key sentence comes in v22: it is necessary to go through many

hardships to enter the kingdom of God. This is not a footnote. It is the

pastoral message Paul and Barnabas leave in every church they

plant. Suffering is not a sign that something has gone wrong - itʼs a

prescription for every believer.

Paul stands in a synagogue - among people who know the story of Israel - and traces the entire arc of that story to its fulfilment in Jesus: promised, rejected, crucified, raised, vindicated.

The response is mixed. Many beg to hear more, but the synagogue rulers contradict and insult. Paul and Barnabas respond directly: since you reject eternal life, we turn to the Gentiles.

This is the fulfilment of Isaiah's vision of a light to the nations. The Gentiles rejoice, the disciples are filled with joy, and Paul and Barnabas are driven out of the region.

The first deliberate, organised mission in Acts is launched from the new community in Antioch - not in a strategic meeting, but as they worship and fast. Paul and Barnabas's first significant encounter on the island of Cyprus is a head-to-head with Elymas, a sorcerer who tries to prevent the proconsul from hearing the gospel. The encounter is not random, itʼs a sign: the mission will face spiritual opposition, but the Spirit of God will prevail.

Chapter 12 is a commentary about where ultimate power lies. Herod Agrippa I is at the height of his authority - executing apostles, imprisoning Peter, enjoying the applause of crowds who honour him as a god. By the end of the chapter he is dead while Peter walks free. The church's weapon against its persecutors is not force, but prayer fervent, persistent, corporate prayer (v5).

Antioch shouldn't have happened. The unnamed disciples who

travelled there after Stephen's death were scattered refugees, not

apostles. Yet a church was planted and something amazing took

root: a community so visibly different that the watching city came

up with a new name for them: Christians.

Antioch also becomes a model of sacrificial generosity, sending

financial relief to Judean brothers and sisters they have never met.

The group that began as a scattered community of refugees

becomes a vibrant church.
