had a few thoughts about something i've seen a majority of my life but never thought long and hard about until it was far away. if any natural thing could be restored with a wish, i'd wish for Red Mountain to not have an expressway.

something's in the mountain
buried beneath the earth's crust
what once was lost in sediment
is now coated in rust
erosion from the elements
bore down harder when man came
lines of explosive charges
revealed iron, coke, and shame
carving through until
the highway runs
as red as
the mountain's in the pageant
and its face on the roadside
we thought it gave us wealth yet
never questioned what's inside
strip mine, the dynamite
tearing through the vein
the blasts drown out its cries
as it bleeds into the clay
god of the forge above us,
just like us, he shows his ass
the towers send their signals
while the club hides the upper class
we dug until it emptied
just ten years before the end
oh, all of our prosperity
borne of wicked demand
carving through until
the highway runs

those far older than we
knew to let the mountain lie
should've known something was fishy
when we found the trilobite
underneath a shroud of smoke,
something much older moved
it fed on us, yet hungered still
by the time it got to you
and was it even worth it? because
when the digging slowed
you blew its skin to bits
to build your precious road
jackals in the capital wanna
keep us starved and high
poisoning us because they fear
what a reckoning looks like
the ridges and the valleys
hold us like hostages now
our prayers are only answered
by deep rumblin' underground
listen 'tween the train whistles
and you'll hear a roarin' boom
and that's because the mountain can
get just as hungry, too
