The story of Jericho was never meant to be told apart from a full understanding of the story of Rahab. Joshua is the hero for sure. He is a type of Christ who leads us into rest, the land of promise. We are not Joshua, we may be Achan, most of us are Rahab. The great faithful God, the God who keeps his promise and fulfills his covenant, has redeemed the likes of us.

The message of David isn’t that we can face the giants in our life and rise above our challenges, and take on anything that is thrown at us…it’s that we can trust in the Lord of Hosts, whose authority is absolute, whose Glory is absolutely assured, and whose name will be exalted.

Often we hear children’s ministry versions of classic Bible heroes and the supposed lessons that God wants to teach us about them. Jonah is no different, and so he read us a typical Sunday school story meant to convey how “God wanted to teach Jonah a lesson” by sending a whale swallow him. Moral of the story? Obey God or he will punish you.
