Synopsis: Without a heart for God and neighbor - greed, debauchery and avarice become the controlling interests of a nation. A wholesale rejection of God and His word leads to the destruction of the symbiotic relationship necessary to have a righteous people and a righteous nation. God will endure only so much injustice and wickedness, before utterly destroying such a nation for the sake of the oppressed.
Amos delivers 8 oracles of judgement. Beginning with Samaria’s neighbors, God declares in a formula of woe that he will judge each nation for their unrepentant lack of brotherly love. The worst of the judgements is reserved for the final overflowing oracle against his own covenant people who are faithless, selfish, greedy and debauched.
