What does biblical revival consist of? In Nineveh there was a royal decree, there were outwards signs of internal changes of heart throughout the whole community that God saw and so mercifully relented.

Synopsis: The fear of the sailors bookends the story of Jonah 1:4-16 because the story reveals that fear is at the heart of true Christian living. Amid our various circumstances, our fear reveals our idols, but also reveals the true God of heaven and earth who is greater than both and in control of both. The greater fear that comes from knowing God leads to true covenant faithfulness, fellowship and worship.

Synopsis: Jonah is a type of Israel. His selfish self-righteousness led to his worshiping a local tribal god of his own making. Yahweh, the true and living God, is the Lord of every nation of the whole earth and welcomes all to his covenant loves and faithfulness.

Synopsis: The success of Jonah’s message of Israelite expansion failed to drive the nation to repentance, so God sent Jonah to preach destruction to the Assyrian capital in hopes of driving Israel to repentance. And this is a sign pointing to Jesus’ relationship with the jews and gentiles in his own day.

Synopsis: Before turning to the familiar story of Jonah, we must first orient ourselves to Jonah’s place in the history of Israel and the history of redemption. Just as understanding what the Deuteronomistic history was, helped us comprehend the literary themes of Samuel, so understanding what texts of the Minor Prophets are, helps us understand the themes of Jonah. So, what is a prophet, what are the minor prophets and how does Jonah fit in their company.
