It’s been said that people are messy, ministry is people, therefore ministry is messy!  It’s true.  Ministry is messy, and it is also hard.  In the Christian world, we often hear of the latest methods and fads about how to “best do ministry.”  Paul kept it simple.  He kept it Christ-centered.  That’s what we want to do at Redeemer.  If you were to open the chest of the Apostle Paul and see his heart you would find that it beat with a passionate love for Jesus Christ.  This is what fueled his service, his ministry philosophy, and all he did for the progress of the gospel.  Paul kept it Christ-centered.  So should we.

We need stability. While the world around us twists and turns, causing all of us to feel quite unsettled, we need resolve. That resolve comes through the reconciling work of Jesus Christ. He took hostile enemies and made them blameless sons who can confidently and steadfastly stand without fault on the last day. Paul wants nothing more than for his friends in Colossae to continue in the faith stable and steadfast. We want that for you too!

What would keep your heart from chasing after other things? What would keep you from doubting that Jesus is enough in your life? Answer: To know the absolute supremacy of Christ over all things. He is all you need for salvation, growth, and victory. Paul’s most persuasive argument to the Colossian church to not give in to the lies that you need something more was simply to hold up the beauty, excellency, and authority of Jesus. It’s true for you today – King Jesus is all you need!

The Colossian church was being challenged – “Are you sure you have the full Christian life?” That’s a question anyone who calls themself a Christian should want to be able to answer definitively. Paul’s answer – “Absolutely!” He wanted to make sure the Colossians could answer it that way too. Here in our text, he describes what they already possess so that they don’t go looking for anything else. They already have it all. Their Gospel cup is full and will never run dry.

The Colossian church was solid. Epaphras had ministered the Gospel to his hometown and a great foundation had been laid. But now, they wonder – “Is that enough? Do we need something more than Christ?” Epaphras reaches out to Paul for help. This letter is what ensues. Paul is so thankful for what he has heard of their faith, and before he launches into his warnings, he expressed his thanksgiving. In this opening text that’s what we see – Gratitude for a group of faithful people who are growing in the Gospel.
