The local church today; is irrelevant to society; is full of hypocrites; hurts more than it helps; is not the church we see in the New Testament; is unimportant because I’m part of the universal church…

We begin a new sermon series at Redeemer called “Grace Made Visible” exploring what a Church is and what it means for Christians. In this sermon, Ps Anthony starts our series with why the church, and more specifically the local church, is so important to Christ and why it should be to us – Jesus really loves his Bride the church, he really gave himself for her, and Christians are called to really love her too.

Luke 22:39-65

Two of the most significant events in human history happen in a garden. In Eden, Adam and Eve are disobedient and the curse of sin enters the world; in Gethsemane, Jesus is obedient and the hope of the world heads towards the cross.

Ps Anthony preaches the events of the garden of Gethsemane and shows that through Jesus’ active obedience we are saved.

Luke 22:31-38

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,

but I have prayed for you…”

Ps Rich preaches through some of the last words Jesus was to speak to his disciples in what is referred to as the “farewell discourse” in the upper room. This passage shows us that Jesus is our great high priest who intercedes for us and is our provision even when we fail him; He is our blessed Redeemer, our only hope, and He has made the way for us to come to God.

Luke 22: 21-30

In the midst of the passover meal, one of the holy feasts of Israel, some unholy things were happening: the betrayal of someone close; doubting friends; and self-promotion, it was a mess. But even in this mess God’s sovereignty and His good purposes are on display. In this sermon, Ps Anthony shows how Jesus what Jesus does with the messiness of His disciples actions then and how He is still doing this with His disciples now.

The hour is drawing closer to when Jesus will die in for sinners on a Roman cross. Prior to that horrific moment He shares in the passover meal with his disciples. This symbol-laden meal is given new significance as Jesus applies its message to Himself and establishes a new covenant that will be ratified in His own blood.
