Should we still tithe our income? Did not the practice of tithing pass away with the old covenant laws? Should we stick with the 10% cut?

This Sunday, we continued wrestling with the idea of generosity towards God. This time, in the matter of tithing. Sam Boateng exhorted us from God’s Word, the need to view our giving to God in an entirely different light. In God’s economy, tithing is a call to partnership, not for extortion.

When Jesus was leaving earth, He commissioned His disciples to make other disciples; to live in a way that brings glory to God wherever they go and in whatever they do. For us who have believed, the commission still holds. How and why we work would change. Creation would feel a sense of restoration. Those who have not heard the Gospel will hear it.

Steve Osei-Mensah of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity admonishes us to carry out the Lord’s commission with prayer, support, and living faithfully wherever we are.

Everything Christians go through in this broken world is meaningless, unless they are looking forward to something. Something must keep them going. Something must hold them down. Something must anchor their souls in the midst of all the trials and suffering. They received this when they were born again—born into the family of God.

Loving Jesus means loving His people—His body. It is impossible to love Jesus and not show that love in how we love, build and serve others who have believed in Him. However messy it can get, and however heavy such commitment may make of us, we are called to it.
