Who is the real Jesus–and what happens when He refuses to fit our expectations?

In this opening sermon from Encountering Jesus, Pete Nicholas explores Jesus’ first public teaching in Luke 4, where He returns to His hometown of Nazareth and declares Himself to be the fulfillment of Isaiah’s ancient prophecy. The people are initially amazed by His words, but admiration quickly turns to rejection when they realize the magnitude of His claims.

Many people are comfortable with a version of Jesus that feels familiar, inspiring, or easy to manage. But the real Jesus is far more disruptive and compelling. He proclaims freedom for the oppressed, forgiveness for sinners, and sight for the spiritually blind while also confronting the assumptions, idols, and resistance of the human heart.

This sermon invites us to move beyond a “comfortable” Jesus and encounter Him as He truly is: gracious, challenging, and life-changing.

As we begin 2026, we’re excited to start a new sermon series, Encountering Jesus. In the Gospels, people were often surprised by Jesus—his teaching, miracles, and compassion were unlike anything they expected.

Today, many assume they already know him or settle for a familiar, comfortable version. But in Luke chapters 4–7, we’re invited into real encounters with Jesus that reveal who he truly is: challenging, compassionate, and life-changing. Join us as we explore these passages together and encounter the real Jesus.
