The sign of Jonah points us ahead to the death and resurrection of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was cut off from God the Father so we wouldn't have to be and was raised from the dead so that we too might dwell with Him for all eternity.

God's salvation is always through judgment and mercy. As God rescues Jonah and the pagan sailors, so he rescues us through the one who would come and ultimately fulfill Jonah's mission.
