This week we begin the New Testament with a survey of Matthew’s introduction of Jesus, from birth to baptism. We’ll consider the events that Matthew records as well as the way explains these events, all of which leads to a most important conclusion about Jesus.

If you’ve come this far in the story of Scripture, hearing from Matthew will be a joy!

This week we conclude our reading of the Old Testament with Psalm 48.

It's a song by the sons of Korah who sung about Zion.

This Sunday, we'll look back to Israel's ancient vision of the city of God. We'll also consider the way this Psalm continues to speak to pilgrims who are on their way to their home in the heavenly city.

Farewell speeches can be memorable, weighty, and meaningful, especially when spoken toward the end of a person’s life. 

King David has such a farewell speech. In 1 Chronicles 29 he is near death, has just given a ton of money for the building of the temple, and his son Solomon is about to take over as king.

This Sunday we take up the final Old Testament Prophet, Malachi.

Malachi surveyed the plight of Israel in his day and spoke directly the sins of the clergy as well as the congregation. He also described a day in which the Lord would visit his people, a day in which God would act for their salvation. The gospel authors quote these very words as the introduce Jesus.

Join us this Sunday and together we’ll consider the prophet Malachi.

In his hymn, Sometimes a Light Surprises, William Cowper, reflects on the message of the prophet Habakkuk:

Though vine nor fig tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there:

For, while in Him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

This Sunday we are excited to welcome Rev. Jeff Shur as our guest preacher! 

Jeff is the Lead Pastor of New Life Church in Irvine, one of our local sister PCA churches. This Sunday, to promote our connectionalism as presbyterians, Pastor Josh and Pastor Jeff are doing a pulpit swap.

Pastor Jeff will preach on the book of Jonah as we continue our Bible in a Year sermon series.

When Israel faced a natural disaster—a locust plague—the Prophet Joel used this event to teach God’s people about the Day of the Lord, when God would enter into history to judge and to save. In light of the coming judgement Joel called Israel to return to the Lord with their hearts. He taught that God is gracious, merciful, and abounds in steadfast love. What’s more, this God will make a full restoration to the fallen world and pour out his Spirit upon all peoples.

Join us this Sunday, and together, we’ll seek to understand Joel’s teaching as well as its fulfillment in the great day of Pentecost.

Daniel takes up the story of four Jewish youths that are taken into exile in Babylon. As they live in a foreign land, their faith is tested and they learn the truth about the God of their forefathers, a God whose dominion is an everlasting dominion and will surely act to establish his Kingdom.

Toward the end of his ministry Ezekiel had a vision of a temple like no other. In it, God would dwell with his people, but more than that, this temple would usher in God’s redemption to all of the world.

The New Covenant that Ezekiel foretold includes making all things new. It is this message of Redemption that Jesus proclaimed in the Kingdom of God and that the book of Revelation expands upon in describing the New Heavens & the New Earth.

What hope is there for humanity?

This Sunday we’ll consider the prophet Ezekiel’s answer to these questions. In short, he proclaimed God’s New Covenant in which the Lord promised to cleanse his people, give them new hearts, and put this Spirit within them.
