Marriage is both glorious and hard. It is the highest joys and passions and the worst kind of blood, sweat and tears that we can know. This week, we turn to Paul’s famous (and to some, “infamous”) teaching on marriage. At the heart of it is a mystery, a picture of God’s love and care for his people. Whether you are married or single, it is important for you to understand and believe the promise that God makes to us in marriage. Join us this Sunday as we tackle this important subject in our continuing series in the book of Ephesians.

Today we welcome to our pulpit Jordan Griesbeck, who is beginning his work as RUF campus minister at the University of Texas.

We live in a morally complex world. In most of the circumstances we face as Christians, the difference between right and wrong is not always abundantly clear, and a simple list of “dos” and “don’ts” won’t give us what we really need in order to make wise decisions that lead to a spiritually fruitful life. What we need is to learn the art of spiritual discernment. In our passage this morning we will examine Paul’s call to the Ephesians Christians to “try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord” and ask how we can develop that kind of discernment in our own lives.

Last week we made the turn we’ve all come to expect in Paul’s epistles: from the doctrine that Paul explains to the practice that Paul applies. This turn from indicative to imperative is an important one to make. Otherwise our heads are full of knowledge but our hands and feet never do the things that the Bible expects us to do. As we make the turn, however, we need to ensure that we don’t leave behind the doctrine that enables us to do the things God commands. Join us this week as we see what God has done for us and how that leads to a new life in Christ as we study Ephesians 4:17-32.

Almost all of us have experienced life defining moments where everything changed and sent us in a new direction. From our first day of school to leaving home to getting married and having children to a new job and a new city to losing a spouse—each moment leaves a clear “before” and “after.” In Ephesians 2, Paul traces our “before” and “after” in salvation. Before our salvation, we were like dead men walking through life. After our salvation, we have been united to Christ and raised to rule and reign with him in heaven. The hinge, the moment that it all became different is described with two important words in Ephesians 2:4, “But God.” Join us this Sunday as we explore the moment that marks our destiny.
