Publisher's Summary:
2123 was not my best year...Let me state for the record... Dying is not fun and is definitely overrated. This was the year the newly formed Galactic Coalition of Planets faced it greatest threat since the D'lralu invasion. The almost omnipotent Heshe sought to redeem themselves for past sins. The problem with this type of redemption was the price others sometimes pay for your salvation...
The Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles is a pure science fiction series following the adventures of a future "Horatio Hornblower"-style character called "Admiral 'Cat' Catherine Kimbridge" ...It's a sci-fi adventure series that is chock-full of real-world cutting edge science ranging from VASMR drives powered by liquid fluorine thorium reactors to entangled quantum communications. Add in a six legged cybernetic dog with a passion for chocolate and anything can happen.
Uncounted millennia ago the uncreated Creator reached forth a hand and touched a series of disparate universes. The touch set in motion ripples that created life in the Creator's image...a life that was self-aware...a life that aspired to be more than it was...a life that sought to create in its own right. Love and fear walked hand in hand. Thus the stage was set for an epic conflict that would span the universes. These are the adventures of one brave soul and her quest to protect all life. These are the Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles.

Vol. 2 in Fine Space Opera
Good space opera is always welcome, and this series appears to fit the bill. "Cat" Kimbridge is a fine heroine with some awesome special capabilities courtesy of an advanced alien race known as Heshe. The universe is "peopled" with a variety of races, all welcomed by humanity in stark contradiction to our own history of tribal, religious and racial conflicts. The first two stories are fast-paced and interesting. In "Redemption" an alien hive mind proves dangerously formidable, and is presented in a novel way.
This volume was a bit abbreviated, which is not a true failing to someone who grew up reading Ace doubles. It ended at an appropriate point but at the 80 percent mark, with the remainder taken up by a long preview of the next volume. No complaints here, but be forewarned.
My sole criticism comes from an important part of the story, but I found it to be implausible and contrary to what I understood to be the character's personality. I won't say more lest it be a spoiler.
The Best Star Trek out there
The good: it's a story about space exploration, with new and intriguing concepts for aliens (as opposed to "tiger-men" or humans with broccoli glued to the foreheads). There's some good science and a few good plot twists. Also, the characters are good people, and don't apologise for it. It's refreshing.
the bad: it could use some more tension. All characters (with one notable exception) are always calm and collected, they never lose their... calm.
the ugly: none, really. It might not be a edge-of-your seats reading, but it has some really good ideas and no weak parts.
It's not perfect, but it's way better than most Space operas / military Sci Fi i've seen around.
