The

prophet of God spoke a radical prophecy

is Radical

This

is radical... the Spirit of God would be poured out.

Up to this point, the Spirit remained behind a veil… not to be experienced but feared.

This

is radical... The spirit of a God was only to be experienced by one

man, the high priest, one day a year... now it will be poured out to

everyone always...

This

is radical... Not just men.. but women also.. not just Jew.. but all

flesh.. not just the select religious, but the servant and

handmaid...

This

is radical...

In

Joel 2 God gave us a radical promise through the voice of the prophet

Joel.

Radical

promise requires radical fulfillment

God

always fulfills His promise. Here is the radical fulfillment.

Acts 2:1-2 (NIV2011) When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:3-4 (NIV2011) They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Is

this radical? Yes!

Acts 2:5-6 (NIV2011) Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Acts 2:12-13 (NIV2011) Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Scripture tells us that God will fight for you. Each week we have imagined what a fight between Jesus and super-powered comic villain would look like. We talked Thanos, Uatu the Watcher, Galactus, Venom.. and even last week our Care Pastor Marshal Blessing brought us a great battle against Professor X.

Today

we are finishing off this series by taking another look at Thanos.

Jesus

Versus Thanos

Back

in week 1 of the series we compared Jesus the God of mercy, to the

Thanos the Merciless Mad Titan. What we will talk about today will

have a lot to do with the overall plot of the Avengers movies…

HOWEVER… I will do my best not to throw out spoilers to Avengers

Endgame… even though it came out over a month ago. I do this out

of love for you guys… With that said…

Remember

Thanos is this god-like bad guy who tries to gain a powerful weapon…

What is that weapon?

He

tries to gain the Infinity Gauntlet that is powered with all 6

Infinity Stones. His goal is to snap his fingers and destroy half of

the life in the universe. …And at the ending of Avengers Infinity

War, as you saw in our intro video, Thanos does snap his fingers.

The

Snap

The

SNAP was tragic.

I remember how it made me feel. Even more than that I remember how it

made made my children feel. When the screen went to black and the

credits started to roll I remember my 8 year old yelling “What!?

No! The bad guy can’t win.” I remember him starting to cry and I

remember holding him in my arms.

I

know that it is a movie.. I know that it is a comic book character..

But the SNAP was tragic and it hit me deeper than I thought it was

going to hit.

The

SNAP left us with 2 kinds of people… It left DEAD PEOPLE…

Half

the life in the universe turned to dust. Even our favorite super

heroes, the Avengers, fell to dust. One moment they were there, and

the next moment they were gone. The SNAP left us with DEAD PEOPLE..

The

SNAP left us with one other kind of person. It left us with LOST

PEOPLE…

No

one knew what to do. Our heroes, that always seem to know what to do,

were so shocked by the outcome of the snap..

JESUS VS

Welcome

back to our sermon series “Jesus Vs”

God

will fight for you.

We’ve

looked at several comic book villains over the past few weeks and

asked how would they stand up in a fight with our Lord and Savior,

Jesus.

Let’s review: Thanos the merciless titan – mercy triumphs over judgment & Jesus has all power

Uatu The Watcher – Inactive God; Jesus is active: He pleads, forgives, redeems

Galactus the Devourer of Worlds – Insufficient God; Jesus is all-sufficient self-sufficient, Jesus sustains us

Venom – the symbiote of sin; the Sinless One has defeated sin but Jesus is also able to save and redeem the person bonded to sin

We’ve

talked about a lot of powerful characters: cosmic powers, planet

consuming powers, powers over time and space

But

there is one type of super power that we haven’t really addressed –

mental powers

We

were looking at villains who had mind-control powers:

Purple Man

– Zebediah Killgrave

The Shadow King

The Puppet Master

But

we decided to go with someone who is a little more well-known,

although he is not a villain…

JESUS

VS PROFESSOR X

Prof.

Charles Xavier is the leader of the X-men. He’s confined to a

wheelchair, but he has incredible mental powers.

He first

appeared in X-men #1 back in 1963.

He’s recently been

portrayed in movies by Sir Patrick Steward and James McAvoy

The

X-men have been a popular super group for a long time. They were

popular when I was a kid, but when my friends and I pretended to be

the X-men I don’t remember anyone wanting to be Prof. X.

There

have been several X-men video games, but I don’t remember any where

you play as Prof. X. His powers weren’t really exciting. He’s not

very physically imposing. His body is weak, but his powers are

incredibly strong.

Professor

Charles Xavier

He

is said to possess the most powerful brain in existence, to be the

world’s greatest telepath, and possesses vast psionic powers:

Telepathy

– able to read minds and project his own thoughts into minds of

others within a radius of 250 miles. With Cerebro he could connect to

every mind on the planet

Illusion

Mind

Control

Mental

Amnesia

Manipulation

Psychic

Blasts (Scanners)

Enemies

wear helmets to protect themselves

Genius

Intelligence

He

could basically control the world (or kill everyone).

Fortunately,

he is a good guy.

He

works for peace and equality between humans and mutants. He leads his

team of X-men to protect innocent lives.

That’s

not to say he doesn’t have his faults:

He has been a

manipulator

Illuminati

He has accidentally hurt people with

his powers

Onslaught

But

for the most part he is a good guy and works to do good.

does he compare to our previous villains?

tells us that God will fight for you. So we are taking a look at how

Jesus might fight for us, but hypothetically pitting him against

Marvel comic characters like Thanos, Uatu the Watcher, &

Galactus.

Today

we are talking about the well-known comic villain Venom

Jesus

Versus Venom

How

will Jesus fight the powerful Venom? Let’s learn more about this

bad guy.

Venom

the Symbiote of Sin

What

are we dealing with when it comes to Venom? As you can see from the

picture and our intro video… Venom is a different kind of creature.

The

character is a sentient alien Symbiote with an amorphous, liquid-like

form, who survives by bonding with a host. This dual-life form

receives enhanced powers and usually refers to itself as "Venom".

A symbiote is an organism in a partnership with another in a way that

profits both.

So

when we are talking about Venom we are actually talking about two

characters… #1 being the alien symbiote & #2 being the host it

has bonded with.

When

not bonded, Venom appears like a blob like substance that scampers

around. In this form it does not seem very powerful… yet when it

bonds with a host the power is evident.

The

Symbiote was originally introduced as a living alien costume in The

Amazing Spider-Man #252 (May 1984). In addition to it being a cool

black costume for Spidey to wear, it was also tear resistant. These

were the original benefits of the symbiote, but the black goo had

more to reveal.

As

Peter Parker, **Spoiler Alert** Spiderman… iF you didn’t know

Peter Parker was Spiderman I want to pray with you in this altar

today… As Peter Parker is bonded with the symbiote he starts to

receive power & abilities that are new for even Spiderman.

Here

are the abilities of the symbiote known as Venom…

* Superhuman

strength, durability, & stamina

* Accelerated

Healing Factor

* Webbing

generation (Spider no longer needed web shooters the symbiote suit

did this on its own)

The

Spiderman superhero was more super than ever with the venom symbiote.

He felt more powerful than ever… but the symbiote started to try

to control Peter Parker. It started to control his thoughts… it

started speaking its own will into the mind of Parker. The symbiote

wanted Spiderman to do evil things.

When

Jesus and Galactus share a few things in common, such as power etc. However there is something that they do not share in common. What is it? If they were to get into a battle, who would win?

the 1st

week we studied mercy as we imagined Jesus Versus Thanos.

Last

week, in week 2 we studied God’s activity as we witnessed Jesus

versus Uatu the Watcher.

Vs

The

point of this fun comic book series is to remember that God will

fight for you.

Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV2011) Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Jesus

has a BIG battle today. You saw the introductory video… Who is

Jesus fighting today?

Jesus Versus Galactus

Who is Galactus you say? Well, he is a cosmic entity, a god-like super-villain, and a main antagonist of the Marvel Universe.

Galactus

the devourer of worlds

Just

how powerful is Galactus…? Here are his abilities

Immeasurable

Cosmic Energy – Nearly omnipotent. Can shatter planets with energy

blasts.

Immortality

– said to be the oldest living entity. Comic lore says he was

created at the big bang that created the universe.

Invulnerability

– Immune to diseases, ailments, and toxins.

Size

Alteration – Can increase his size & mass.

Force-fields

– near-impenetrable energy shields.

Molecular

reconstruction, matter transmutation, teleportation, interdimentional

portals, telepathy, telekinesis, cosmic awareness, resurrection,

scentient life creation, soul control manipulation, power bestowal,

healing powers…

Galactus

is as big as he wants to be. He can grow to any size… big enough

to hold worlds… even entire galaxies in his hands. The smallest

Galactus can become is 10 ft 9 inches.

And

of course… I am burying the lead on Galactus. Here is the major

thing to know about Galactus – He eats worlds. He is big enough &

powerful enough to eat entire planets and all the inhabitants

therein. For this he is named Galactus: The Devourer of Worlds.

How

could Jesus ever face someone like the mighty devourer of worlds

Galactus?

Versus Galctus

I

have been excited about this sermon for a while. Although Galactus

has never appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think you can

count on seeing him in the future. He originally appears in

Fantastic Four issue #48 and has been an often re-occurring

character. You can’t really have a marvel universe without Galactus

devourer of worlds.

When

we first contemplated this villain for the series, I was sure I was

going to approach it as “savior of the world vs devourer of the

world.”

want you to remember that you have a God who will fight for you. So

let’s take some time to study how God fights for us, and at the

same time play a fun game of “imagine if Jesus were to fight a well

known Marvel villain.

Does

anyone remember who Jesus fought in week 1?

Vs Thanos

Thanos!

Last week we imagined the merciful savior Jesus Christ, vs the

merciless mad Titan Thanos.

Although

Thanos gained the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, he lost to a

merciful Jesus who holds power over all 6 infinity stones. Jesus

showed us the Mercy triumphs over judgment.

We

are loved by a God of Mercy! God is merciful, even in judgment. He

offers us all…

* A

way of escape.

* Space

for grace.

* Merciful

correction.

God is merciful even in judgment

Today

we are talking about a more obscure marvel comic-book character. As

you saw in our introductory video, today’s character is The Watcher

known as Uatu.

Uatu

the Watcher

The

Watchers are a race of fictional extraterrestrials appearing in

Marvel Comics. The first watcher to appear is named Uatu, appearing

in the 1963 Fantastic Four #13 comic. The purpose of the Watcher is

to watch over the multiverses, but not to ever get involved.

The

Watchers are among the oldest and most advanced beings in the cosmos.

Eons ago, they sought to spread their knowledge to benefit the lesser

races of the Universe. Their first attempt, on the planet Prosilicus,

included sharing nuclear technology. When the Watchers returned to

Prosilicus, they found the natives had all but destroyed themselves

in a nuclear war. The Watchers blamed themselves for the catastrophe

and vowed to never again meddle in the affairs of other races.

Instead, they passively observe and record events for those who will

come after the universe ends.

Among

his recorded abilities are telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation,

astral projection, and clairovoyance. He can generate energy blasts

and fire them from his hands or eyes. He can alter his appearance,

growing in size or can impersonate others. Like all watchers he is

virtually immortal.

Uatu

is powerful. Just how powerful no one knows. No one has ever

witnessed the fullness of his power.

Uatu

is knowledgeable. Just how knowledgeable no one knows. No one has

ever witnessed the fullness of his knowledge.

This

makes me wonder what would happen in a battle of Jesus vs Uatu the

Watcher.
