Before you hop on an Airplane and go change a far away country, God wants you to change things right where you are. He has given you Spirit Power to begin right where you stand.

We must make our domain, the territory of our influence, God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is wherever he rules and reigns. Does God rule and reign in your sphere of influence? You should have a growing influence that is surrendered to God’s rule & reign.

You are called to change the world through this growing influence, and that seems very difficult. It is easier than you think.

The influence you already have could change the world right now! Let’s get to work.

Change the World

I believe everyone in the world would like to change the world. It doesn’t matter what your belief system is, you would like to see some things changed.  Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and atheism… they would all like to see the world changed.

Even if we disagree on how we would change the world, we could at the very least agree that we have this desire to see the world changed.

Everyone has this desire inside of them. Given all our differences, this similarity is striking. We don’t see animals trying to change the world. Monkeys, dolphins, and lions have never protested injustice, tried to feed the hungry, or stop the ongoing abuse of creatures around them. This desire within us to change the world, might be something more than evolutionary progress.

Humanity has this purpose inside us to Change the World.

In your Bible, God calls men & women to change the world.

Jesus said in Mark 16:15 (NIV2011) “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 

We are called to go into this world and change it through the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

God has placed an anointed purpose upon you to proclaim good news, proclaim freedom, and to bring healing.

Luke 4:18 (NIV2011) “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 

God’s Spirit is given to you to empower you to change the world.

Acts 1:8 (NIV2011) You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 

God’s Spirit has enough power to carry you to the ends of the world!

In Acts 17 men who were stirring up trouble against the apostle Paul and the rest of the church in Thessalonica started a riot. They were shouting in the streets that these Christians had “turned the world upside down.”

Yeah we didn’t think so!

There are some dark stories in your Bible. Most of the time the Bible teaches by shining light, but on some occasions it teaches through a absence of light.

One such dark story is found in the closing chapters of Judges. From Judges 19-21 we given a gross, shocking, & bloody story. It tells of a concubine cut into 12 pieces. Upon reading this story you are bound to ask “Why is this story in the Bible?”

We give the entire story and the answer to why it’s in God word in today’s sermon.

Welcome back to Redemption Church. My name is Chris Fluitt. I am blessed to be preaching to you today. We are in the 4th week of our spooky sermon series – Biblical Horror Stories.

Biblical Horror Story

There are dark stories in the bible that have so much to teach us. We have talked about Jephthah’s vow, Herod’s worms, and Jerusalem’s cannibalism. If you missed any of these I urge you to go check them out on our website – redemption-church.com.

Have you heard about the Bible story of the man of God who cut up his wife into 12 pieces and mailed off the pieces to 12 of his friends?

Turn in your Bibles to Judges 19 and let’s read this crazy, gross, and shocking story.

Judges 19:1 (NIV2011) In those days Israel had no king. Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. 

Judges 19:2 (NIV2011) But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, 

A Levite & his concubine

What is a Levite?  A Levite is an Israelite from the tribe of Levi. It was a tribe of priests. Every priest was a Levite. Levites were designed by God to care for His tabernacle and minister God’s presence.

This was a Levite – a minister of God’s presence. And he owned a concubine… What is a concubine? It’s complicated.

Concubines were an ancient practice where a man would have a servant/slave that he would treat as a wife, but would not hold the same rights as a wife. Concubines were used as surrogate mothers, yet there children would not be heirs. Sometimes the man could give full rights to the concubine and raise her status to wife. The ancient world was gross and women suffered greatly.

So there is a concubine who runs away and became unfaithful and the Levite went to retrieve his “property.”

[By the way the Bible does not ever endorse this practice! Jesus clearly refutes it.]

The father of the concubine welcomes the Levite and for 8 verses tries to keep the Levite from leaving his house, but to stay another night. He stays 4 nights and finally decides to leave late on the 5th day.

Judges 19:10 (NIV2011) But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine. 

Judges 19:11 (NIV2011) When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites and spend the night.” 

Judges 19:12 (NIV2011) His master replied, “No.

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘horror?’ What if I said you ought to think of your Bible?

Sure the Bible has some beautiful stories, but it also contains darker stories that trigger fear, shock, & disgust. Let’s be brave and search out these stories together.

In today’s story we witness the terrifying consequences of an entire city turning away from God while their king refuses to accept responsibility. Famine! Cannibalism! Leprosy! How can anyone save these people from this horrific situation?

This Biblical Horror story has a twist, and it hinges on four men with leprosy

Spoiler Alert: They do not get healed

Leprosy is Horrific

“Leprosy” could be used to refer to a variety of skin diseases in the Bible.

It was potentially deadly, incurable, and contagious

The disease we call leprosy today can be cured, back then it couldn’t

Bacterial infection, it can go undetected for up to 20 years

Granulomas of the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, and nerves

You lose the ability to feel pain, you get injured, it gets infected, parts fall off

And leprosy isn’t even the worst part of this horrific story!

 

2 Kings 3:1 NIV Joram [Jehoram] son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years.

2 Kings 3:2 NIV He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone of Baal that his father had made.

2 Kings 3:3 NIV Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.

 

2 Kings 6:24 NIV Some time later, Ben-Hadad king of Aram mobilized his entire army and marched up and laid siege to Samaria.

2 Kings 6:25 NIV There was a great famine in the city; the siege lasted so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter of a cab of seed pods for five shekels.

Famine is Horrific

2 Kings 6:26 NIV As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”

2 Kings 6:27 NIV The king replied, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?”

2 Kings 6:28 NIV Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’

2 Kings 6:29 NIV So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

2 Kings 6:30 NIV When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had sackcloth on his body.

Famine is Horrific

Famine is horrific, but you don’t just start eating children.

There was something else going on here.

Biblical Horror Story

Last week we told you about Jephthah. It was a dark story where a father made a vow to kill his daughter for God.

All Scripture is God breathed and useful, but we have to figure out how to use it. Some stories are not shining the light of truth. Some stories in your Bible are actually revealing what life is like in darkness.

Have you heard the story about a King who took something that didn’t belong to him and died in a very gross way? Do you know that one?  I bet your Sunday school teacher never touched this one!

Acts 12:1 (NIV2011) It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 

This guy named Herod was referred to as a king… but really he was just a figurehead installed by the real governmental power over Israel at the time – Rome.

Herod’s father, Herod the great, was the guy that tried to kill baby Jesus after the magi visited him. He sent soldiers around killing new born boys.  This Herod in Acts 12 is Herod Antipas and he is the one who killed John the Baptist. He is the one that Jesus stood before for a portion of His trial. Herod wanted Jesus perform miracles for him..

Fast forward many years and now Herod is persecuting the church of Jesus Christ. He is arresting those who belonged to the church.

Acts 12:2 (NIV2011) He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 

this Herod beheaded John the Baptist. Now he has killed James the brother of John. Who are James & John? They are 2 of Jesus’ disciples. James is the first disciple/apostle murdered.

Acts 12:3 (NIV2011) When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also.

He kills James and when he sees that people approved of it… People cheered the killing of James. People applauded this evil.

Jephthah is a strange character in the Bible. In a matter of moments he both experiences God’s Spirit and also makes one of the worst decisions of his life. Horror ensues from his irresponsibility.

In this Biblical Horror Story series we will be investigating mysterious stories that may fill your heart with fear, shock, and even disgust. You will likely wonder why God put such stories within His Word. Let’s be brave and search it out together.

Biblical Horror Story

What if I told you there was a man in scripture who was used mightily by God, yet while in service to God made a promise that turned horrific?  Do you know this story? Turn to Judges 11.

Judges 11:1 (NIV2011) Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. 

Judges 11:2 (NIV2011) Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” 

Judges 11:3 (NIV2011) So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him. 

If you have a group of scoundrels gathered around you and call you their leader… then you are probably a really big scoundrel yourself.

Judges 11:4 (NIV2011) Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, 

Judges 11:5 (NIV2011) the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 

Judges 11:6 (NIV2011) “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.” 

Judges 11:9 (NIV2011) Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?” 

Judges 11:10 (NIV2011) The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.” 

A major turn of events! When Gilead was in a troublesome war with the Ammonites, Gilead turned to the biggest scoundrel they could think of.

Racism is a Sin

I was around 14 years old sitting in front of my TV. I was just going around the channels looking for something to watch. Something caught my eye. It was known as the Jerry Springer show which is ridiculous enough. (Kids do me a favor and DO NOT google the show.) On this show they were featuring KKK members, the Klu Klux Klan. On screen was a man with a white sheet on his head, and he was hate filled. He was saying awful things about people who had different colored skin. As shocking as that was, what really shocked me what he held in his hand.

The KKK member was holding a bible in his hand and was actually quoting it. Sunday school had not prepared me for this. I was not sure what to think.

It can be a shock to see how people handle the Bible.

We condemn racism. We condemn racial supremacy. We condemn hatred.

Join as we take a look at the Bible that was in the hands of that white supremacist.

I have an important sermon for you today. It will feel awkward. It will feel challenging. Parts of this sermon will make you feel sad. Stick with me. Preach with me today.

Racism is a sin.

We condemn racism. We condemn racial supremacy. We condemn hatred.

I learned that day that, sadly, many racial supremacists use the Bible, call themselves Christians, and believe that Jesus is happy with them.

Today at Redemption Church I want us to take a stand for what scripture says. And I am going to present you a different kind of sermon. I am going to present you with scriptures that are used by a white supremacist pastor in 1952, during the civil rights movement. Let’s see if White Supremacy has a biblical leg to stand on.

The pastor’s name was WILLIAM LESTER BLESSING and I have checked with our care pastor, Marshal Blessing, there is no relation.

William declares “WHITE SUPREMACY IS TAUGHT IN THE BIBLE, VERIFIED BY HISTORY, JUSTIFIED BY CIVILIZATION, AND INSTINCTIVELY BELIEVED IN BY ALL RACES—THEIR CONSCIENCE BEARING WITNESS TO THIS TRUTH.”   (REDEMPTION LET’S TAKE A LOOK AND SEE IF THIS IS TRUE….)

What we will focus on is that first part.  Is white supremacy, or any racial supremacy for that matter taught in the Bible?

William starts off in the Garden of Eden to show that Racism goes back to early parts of Genesis. He has us read Genesis 3:1.

Genesis 3:1 (NIV2011) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made… 

He then offers his commentary that the “Serpent” was not an animal but a “serpent race” different from the race of Adam. He preaches that Adam & Eve were white and the serpent race refers ...

Life requires us to know what IS and what ISN’T.

This is especially true when it comes to YOU. You need to know what YOU IS and YOU ISN’T! Or if you insist on proper grammar.. YOU ARE and YOU AREN’T.

God has a lot to say about you, but so does the devil. It is so important you listen to the right voice.

Life requires you to know what IS and what ISN’T.

Life can be confusing if you confuse what is and isn’t.

Welcome to Redemption Church of Plano Tx. My name is Chris Fluitt and I am excited to be preaching to you today. We are in the last week of our Is Isn’t series.

 

Week 1 – Jesus is Fully God and Fully Man.  Jesus isn’t anything like the Pharisees

Week 2 – Church is built by God right by the gates of hell.  Church isn’t a club for perfect people.

Week 3 – Faith is essential and God has given everyone a measure of faith.  Faith isn’t having all the answers or a get out of jail free card.

Today we are going to talk about you.  You is and isn’t.    (You are and aren’t)

 

It’s important to know who you are and who you aren’t.

Lebron James is probably the best basketball player in the world… but he would make a terrible horse jockey…

All time great forward… or the worst horse racer of all time.  Can you imagine how different his life would be if he would have decided he was going to be a jockey?

Have you ever tried to be someone you aren’t?   In Junior High I tried to be cool… which I interpreted as cursing… Everyone laughed at me cursing because they realized that wasn’t really me. It’s never cool to try to be someone you aren’t.

Think for a moment how different our lives would be if we spent all our energy trying to be what we aren’t.

 

God says some things about who You are and Aren’t

 

You Are not your own

1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(NIV)

1 Corinthians 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.(NIV)

You don’t belong to yourself. You belong to the creator.

This makes sense, but we don’t always live life like we belong to the creator…

                We make our own decisions without consulting God.

                We become worried rather than trust God.

                We often go our own way when God has clearly told us differently.

But You are not your own!

Therefore you should honor God with all that you are.

 

Aren’t you glad God doesn’t leave us to be our own?  You aren’t your own… Savior, Healer, Counselor, Comforter

 

Here is why God doesn’t leave you alone.

You are loved

God loves you.  This is the most important thing you can know in life.

Don’t let anyone tell you, you aren’t loved!  That is a lie.

 

If you know that God loves you… you most likely remember the moment you realized He loves you.  That moment is life changing.  You should be quick to tell the story of God’s love for you.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(NIV)

 

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(NIV)

5:10 For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son…

 

God’s love for you isn’t dependent on your actions. God loves us while we are sinners and His enemies.

 

You shouldn’t feel worthless.

Faith is Faith Isn’t.

It’s important to know what is and what isn’t so that you know what you have. The Bible says faith is “assurance of what we do not see,” but is faith invisible? Is faith silly? Is faith a struggle? If we understood what faith is and isn’t we might realize we already have faith. Where is your faith?

Romans 12:3  …the measure of faith God has given you.

So what is faith? – Trust in, confidence

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Everyone has faith in something.  Floor, gravity, Big Bang

In New Testament “faith” refers to faith in Christ

This is most real thing you can have faith in.  “In Him all things hold together.” Col 1:17

Jesus asks His disciples “Where is your faith?”

Faith is a struggle

Faith isn’t silly

1 Corinthians 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.

They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

Everyone has faith in something

The world tries to tell you that faith in Jesus is silly

Faith isn’t having all the answers

Faith doesn’t mean you have complete understanding

We need to be able to “give an answer for our hope.” 1 Peter 3:15

But we will never completely understand God, we can still have faith in Him.

                1 Timothy 6:12a “Fight the good fight of faith”

Faith isn’t a preference – “I think I’ll believe this today.”

Faith isn’t just mental ascent.

Faith isn’t invisible

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Jesus looked upon their faith.

Faith is active

                Faith is a living thing.  “Faith without works is dead.” James 2:26

A shark has to keep moving to stay alive.  Faith has to remain active to stay alive.

Faith isn’t just a mental activity

Faith isn’t a checklist/ a get out of jail free card

                Faith isn’t a list of rules

                “Brother if you just have faith…”

Faith doesn’t guarantee a problem free life

John 16:33 “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace.

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Faith is Powerful

                If you had faith the size of mustard seed…

Faith is essential

                Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to

Him must believe that He exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

 

We do three things.  About to talk to God.  Faith is active.  Faith doesn’t mean you have all the answers.  God rewards those who earnestly seek Him.  Faith is powerful.  Where is your faith?
