“If we are not intentional with advent, our hope gets replaced.” Welcome to Advent! For our first Advent Sunday, we focus on the Prophets and the Messianic hope. Andrew spends time in the Old Testament book of Micah, who wrote during a time much like ours, a time of consumerism and greed, and yet called his readers to a higher hope–a Messiah, a God-With-Us on the move–that would bring the true peace every human in history has longed for. Andrew asks us: Where do we look for peace during the holiday season? Where do we look for comfort? Where are we putting our hope?

“The work is getting the kingdom into the people.” For our very last episode of The Gospel According to Jesus series, Robert finishes walking through the redemptive story of Jesus. He reminds us of how important it is to get the story straight- when Jesus proclaims the kingdom, he means his presence is coming into the world. With this event comes an invitation: before the kingdom of God comes in power, if you want to be a part, it takes one act. It’s to pledge your allegiance to the coming king.

“You can’t experience what God means to you until you suffer.” This week is the first of a two part episode about the plot of this good news story according to Jesus. “We have to understand where we are in the story to make sense of it.” For the next segment of The Gospel According to Jesus, Robert dives into the setting of the gospel story–the period, duration, location and level of conflict of the story–and why story is so significant to humans in the first place. “If we ache for the world to be saved, there must be somewhere where that’s true.” For this episode of the Gospel According to Jesus, Robert walks through the assumptions of the gospel, reminding us that everything we desire is because what we desire exists; if we desire to see things set right, it’s because we know in our hearts that it’s possible. Using 1 Corinthians 15, he reminds us that the resurrection is our ultimate hope, that reality that the kingdom we long for has come in part and will one day come in full. This is the gospel: we have a living hope that one day, everything will be set right.

Using the text of Acts 16, Andrew spends time talking with us about missional and listening prayer. This kind of living where we actively join God’s invitation to be a part of what he’s doing in the world seems so foreign to us–Andrew reminds us that it requires a willingness to be silly, to be wrong, to pay attention to the people to whom we are sent, to choose to see those who are often overlooked, to have an open mind, and to respond in faith.

“The stories we have shape who we are.” For the next iteration of The Gospel According to Jesus, Robert talks about the importance of the narrative we choose to live into, reminding us that the narratives we live with transform the way we live our lives. He expounds on root meaning of the word gospel and the context in which those “gospel” words made their way into our story. “The gospel is not the story of how to be saved,” he says. “Rather, it’s the key ways God is turning the broken world into the kingdom of God on Earth.”

“We are called to pray for an everyday kind of forgiveness. We are the ones withholding and releasing the kingdom of heaven in the world!” Robert closes out our Beloved series with a sermon about living into our identity as beloved children of God, willingly setting down our pride and arrogance for a posture  that brings us into community with God and those around us. Our work is not to offer more goods to a greedy God, but to submit ourselves humbly to the God who wants to love us, keeping away from anything that might take away God’s place in our hearts.
