  • Mark 16:1-8 – The Resurrection in Life

This week I am going to preach on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In some ways, that’s what I do every week, and if I get away from it, I ought to look for a new job. But this is a Sunday to especially highlight the resurrection. I will work to help us consider why the resurrection matters, why it’s important that it was a bodily, physical resurrection, and what it means for us. We will look into the views on resurrection in the world at the time of Christ and the importance of the historic moment. I am also eager to preach on the future hope of resurrection and how it is different than most Christians in the West think about heaven and hell. Finally, we will see that the resurrection is not just something we think about, reflect on, and remember, but to follow Jesus is to enter into resurrection life now.

  • Luke 19:28-48 – The King Draws Near

This past Sunday, Pastor Nathan preached on the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. It is the event we celebrate each year as the people who had been with Jesus ushered him into the city riding on the back of a donkey, waving palm branches, and crying out “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Pastor Nathan will help us understand the importance and significance of the event, and help us to consider what it means to truly know Jesus and be drawn to worship him.

  • Matthew 14:13-21 – Feeding 5,000

Jesus was rejected in his own hometown, his cousin John was beheaded by King Herod Antipas, and Jesus learned that the King had heard about his ministry and miracles. So, Jesus tried to get some time alone in a remote place. A massive crowd followed him. As we study the passage together this week, we will see the contrast between the response of Jesus compared to the response of His disciples. At RHC, we talk a lot about having a strong theology of food, evidenced by our Lent devotional and recipe guide. Feeding the 5,000 is a great time for us to look at the missiology of Jesus’ ministry.

  • Matthew 13:54-14:14 – The Scandal of Christ

This Sunday we continued The Upside-Down Kingdom in Matthew 13:54-14:14. The argument is often made that Christianity is behind the times and that the modern world has moved past the traditional emphases and stands of the church. What that argument misses is that Jesus was controversial and counter-cultural 2,000 years ago, at least as much if not more than today. Jesus was rejected by Jews and Romans alike, people felt scandalized by him. He was even rejected in his hometown, Nazareth! On Sunday we saw some of why he is so controversial, why people hated him then, and how that shapes the way we understand Jesus and His Kingdom today.

  • Matthew 13:44-52 – Parables of Treasure, Pearls, & Fishnets

This chapter full of parables comes to its close with four additional parables. The parables this week – the treasure in a field, pearl of great price, fish in the net, and owner of a house – all parallel parables that have come earlier in this chapter. Individually and collectively, they show us the reality of the cost of discipleship. That is, Jesus told His disciples clearly that it would cost them everything to follow Him and be part of the Kingdom of God. The question that we will wrestle with together is – what does Jesus ask of us, and is it worth it?

  • Matthew 13:24-43 – Parables of the Weeds, Leaven, & Mustard Seeds

After the Parable of the Sower and Jesus’ explanation to His disciples, a natural question came up. If Jesus is sowing good seed and it is a matter of the soil of our hearts taking in God’s Word and the proclamation of the Kingdom, then how do we make sense of all the “bad seed” sown around us? The world doesn’t look like a lot of good. In fact, it can often be more of a challenge to see the good through the difficult, unjust, and wickedness of the world.
Jesus answered with a series of three parables: The Parables of the Weeds, Mustard Seed, and Leaven. Each one shows us something unique about the Kingdom of God. Each one tells us something we have to know about how God works and how God is at work, both at the time of Christ, and in our lives and world here and now.

  • Matthew 13:1-23 – The Parable of the Sower

After some heavy sections through the Sermon on the Mount, seeing the ministry of Jesus reflecting the Kingdom of God, and the confrontations between Jesus and the Pharisees, we get to settle into some parables. Parables are stories that reflect and express deeper themes using vivid imagery, metaphors, and simile. Parables were one of the primary styles of teaching from Jesus. On Sunday we will look at Matthew 13:1-23, “The Parable of the Sower.” This parable happens to also include an explanation from Jesus to His disciples. We will see the different ways that our hearts might respond to the gospel and to God’s Word.

  • Matthew 12:38-50 – The Sign of Jonah

When we left off, the Pharisees confronted Jesus and claimed that his work in casting out demons was actually the work of Satan. Jesus put them in their place. The next angle comes this Sunday. In what seems to be the same conversation and moment, the Pharisees challenged Jesus to give them a sign, a miracle that they would deem to be sufficient to prove his credentials as being sent by God. His answer shows us that there is no one like Jesus. We can’t stay neutral on him. His claims are either true and glorious, or crazy and blasphemous.

  • 1 John 2:3-17 – Abiding with God in the Light

In the letter of First John, we get a clear picture of what the world is really like. As the early church wrestled to understand the Christian life, John wanted them to be reassured of their secure relationship with God in spite of a chaotic world. Feel free to look ahead. We will be covering 1 John 2:3-17.

  • 1 John 1:1-2:2 – Walking with God in the Light

What difference does it make to know God is there? For sure, in the midst of trials, it's very reassuring to know He is there to help us in our time of need. But, what about other times? What difference does it make to know God is there in the everyday stuff of life? He's there just as much in the washing of dishes, the folding of clothes, the shoveling of snow, and in the standing in line at the checkout stand. Our focus on Sunday was on walking with God.
