Bible Text: Luke 24: 1-35
Three days and three nights after Jesus was dead and buried, on the road to Emmaus 2 men encountered Christ on the first day of His resurrection.
This conversation which happened 14,000 km away from Ormiston and over 2000 years ago in fact reflects accurately the status of our individual relationship with the resurrected Christ.

Only this time, He has returned not as a lamb to be slaughtered, but as our triumphant King to be worshipped.

Bible Text: Luke 23:26-49
Good Friday is both a day of sadness and of joy. Sadness because it was our sin that held Jesus to the cross, and yet joy because He took the punishment we deserved so that we might be reconciled to God. It is also the day Jesus established his new kingdom. With His death the way is now open for His people to draw near to God. In that sense, as Jesus died He is crowned. And like other coronations, Jesus' tells us what sort of King He is and what sort of Kingdom He will rule.

April 05, 2023 The King Comes - 2/04/2023
Last week Jono led us through passages from Luke 18 which left us asking the question “Will you follow the King?”. And continuing on from that, Ben will be taking us through Jesus’ Triumphal Entry where the King comes to Jerusalem. Jesus is praised with a great commotion as he rides his donkey towards the city ruled by the despised Romans. The people praised Jesus as he approached Jerusalem because they thought that he was the right king to de-throne the Romans and reign as their earthly king. But the Triumphal Entry hints at the fact that they might’ve have had the wrong king. Jesus was the king who would ride towards his death in order to grant salvation by his blood – and although no one saw it in the moment, this is what made him the right king for the people and this is what makes him the right king for us.

This week we switch gears from Jacob and what God was doing in and through him, to Jesus and what He was teaching as He made His way to Jerusalem. Easter is only a few weeks away and so we want to focus in on His death and resurrection for our salvation. This week we will look at most of Luke chapter 18 and ask the question, 'who will follow the king?' Jesus will be crowned as King when he reaches Jerusalem, but not the sort of king they expected, and Jesus is looking for a different kind of follower than was expected as well.

Laban has already got the better of Jacob once, but now Jacob is determined to win. Only, Jacob has once again forgotten that he has the God of the universe in his corner. He strives to do it on his own, but God is faithful to His promises and not only ensures Jacob is blessed but proves to Jacob that He can protect and provide for him.

Last time we were in Genesis, we saw that Jacob had made a mistake. It seems he thought that because promised to bless him and care for him, those things were the true prize. But they aren't, God is our true prize. We were created to prize Him above all else. This week we will see the ways the people around Jacob continue to make that mistake. But we will also see God graciously acting, in the midst of sin and mess, to redeem them and help them see Him as their true prize.

We return this week to our series following the family of Abraham, the family through whom God chose to bless the world. As we have seen this doesn't mean that perfect, far from it. When we left off at the end of last year Jacob was on the run after tricking his farther and brother. God had appeared to Jacob and assured him of His care and blessing. One might expect that Jacob would be a completely new man, that he would turn from his self-sufficiency and rely on God, but that is not what happens and, as we continue we see God still has many lessons to teach Jacob. Lessons that are also helpful for us.

We are called to live for the glory of God. I'm sure we accept that's what we are supposed to be doing. But what does it actually mean? Does it mean singing a lot? Does it mean telling people in every conversation how good God is? Does it just mean being a good or nice person? In today's passage Paul, who is facing possible execution, shows us what it means to live a life completely dedicated to the glory and honour Jesus. It is challenging, but also exciting because this is purpose for which we were made.
