In this episode of the Re-Dream Education Podcast, we’re talking about one of the most important—and sometimes most uncomfortable—parts of starting, running, and growing a microschool: MONEY.

Money is the fuel behind the dream.

I’m taking you behind the scenes of my own journey—from starting Lighthouse Learning with just six students in my living room to building a growing microschool serving nearly 100 students. And I’m sharing the financial lessons I’ve had to learn along the way.

We’re talking about what it really costs to start and operate a microschool, how to price tuition, understanding revenue versus profit, budgeting, payroll, cash flow, reserves, enrollment targets, founder compensation, the Profit First method, fundraising, grants, and why we eventually created a nonprofit foundation to help expand the mission beyond what tuition alone could support.

Because more students don't automatically mean more profit.

More revenue doesn't necessarily mean more money in the bank.

And a growing school isn't automatically a financially sustainable school.

In this first episode of our Series, "The Real Work Behind Building a Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid" we’re going back to where every microschool begins: the dream.

I went quiet on the podcast for a while—but the dream didn’t go quiet. It kept growing. And as Lighthouse Learning grew, I began to understand something every microschool founder, homeschool hybrid leader, and education entrepreneur eventually discovers: dreaming and leading are two very different things—but you need both.

Starting a microschool often begins with a powerful vision for education. You see what traditional education could do differently. And somewhere in the work of running the school, founders can stop dreaming.

Have you ever found yourself standing between one season ending and another beginning, wondering how everything changed so quickly?

May has been a whirlwind. Between end-of-year celebrations, family visiting from out of town, preparing Lighthouse Learning for summer and a new school year, and watching my daughters step into new chapters of life, I've been reminded that transitions can be both beautiful and uncomfortable at the same time.

What if reading instruction wasn’t based on grade level—but on what your child actually needs? In this episode, we break down how Lighthouse Learning Microschool uses a tailored, research-based approach to reading through phonics-based progression, intentional assessment, and our walk-to-learn model. Using the UFLI Foundations framework, we group students based on skill level rather than age, allowing each child to receive targeted instruction in phonics, reading, writing, and spelling at the level they are ready for. Every three weeks, we reassess and adjust groups, ensuring students are continually progressing and supported.

We also share how our data wall helps us track growth, identify needs, and make informed instructional decisions, while allowing students to “test out” of phonics and move into higher-level comprehension groups when they are ready.
