Welcome to the ninth episode of Ree Speaks, hosted by me Rianna.
*Trigger warning, this episode features content on sexual violence and abuse in relation to the topic of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). This episode also features language that some listeners might find offensive.
In this episode, I’ll be speaking with Jade LB, the original writer of the noughties classic Keisha The Sket.
Alongside being a writer, Jade is also a lecturer in African politics in London, where she leads a module and supports and challenges students to understand the complexities of the political landscape across the continent.
In this conversation, I speak with Jade about
her motivations for writing Keisha the Sket at the tender age of 13
her experience of working with the Merky Books team to publish Keisha the Sket nearly two decades on
her thoughts on Black British girlhood, Black female sexual empowerment, sexual agency and healing
and her future career plans. The intro and outro of this episode is taken from Alicia Keys - Girl on Fire (Official Video)
The short narrated clip of Keisha the Sket read by Jade LB is taken from the original version of the story.
The short clip on Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is taken from a YouTube video titled "Child exploitation - would you know the signs?
The short clip by Dr Carlene Firmin is taken from her TEDxTottenham talk titled "Contextual Safeguarding: Re-writing the rules of child protection | Carlene Firmin | TEDxTottenham"
Jade will also be at the Southbank Center in October talking about Keisha The Sket which you now buy tickets for here.
