As they can withstand heavy storms, they offer many species a safe home. A team has now discovered that a very specific type of 'cement' is responsible for the stability of coral reefs - by forming a hard calcareous skeleton, coralline red algae stabilize the reefs, and have been doing so for at least 150 million years. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy137 Deven & Peter- It's been over four years since we first became aware of the Moai robotic glass cleaner and we're happy to learn that this project is still alive. Today we are going to talk about Reefing on the go, setting yourself up for success when you are away from your tank. Be it a few days out of town a week or longer vacation or regular travel for work, there are steps you can take, choices you can make, and systems you can put in place that will help you succeed. First off, can it be done? We are going to give a tentative yes. It is going to be a bit more difficult and will require some serious planning, smart choices, and help if your travel is a consistent thing. The traditional classification of corals is dead, says Prof Andrew Baird, from James Cook University, who led a recent scientific journey along the Great Barrier Reef, uncovering treasure troves of new, unidentified coral species. New molecular tools allow us to reinvent a new classification system on the ashes of the old. Hence, the name we have given to the research: Project Phoenix, he said. These are exciting times to be a coral taxonomist. What this means, essentially, is that new methods of DNA testing can target regions of the coral genome that are relevant to the specific research interests, allowing scientists to zero in on novel variants and better differentiate species. Many current coral species are predicted to turn into multiple true species, linked by their actual DNA profiles rather than physical appearance. Aquarists, divers, marine biologists: Be ready to have all your existing reference works on stony coral genera and species become obsolete. Dr. Andrea Quattrini, curator of corals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, developed the new genetic tool. She says it provides a way forward with plans to secure the future of coral reefs. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy131 Peter- Talks with Sicce Tip of the Week: If you are going into or already using one of the systems we talk about this week, take a look at a really clever tool we noticed over on Melev's Reef.
