Reel Bad

It’s week two of our Month of Lurve and we decided on a long and uncomfortable — yet enlightening — conversation about one of the more difficult movies to discuss on this podcast: the fanfic-turned-novel-turned-movie, Fifty Shades of Grey. Nick, Nicole, Matt, and Rachel chat about this film’s history and how, sometimes, story and storytelling can be very different experiences in the same piece of media.

It’s our Month of Lurve on Reel Bad, so we thought we’d start with the classic and gooey love story Hellraiser! As we launch into a new franchise, we ask, “Why is this movie on the list?” Matt, Sarah, Nick, and Tuna are happy to answer that question.

It's the final film in our January of children's films and... we've all been through quite a bit. Masters of the Universe is the adaptation of a cartoon that was an adaptation of a line of toys. All three of these things had a fair amount of stupid in them, but is this movie bad? Have a listen and find out!

Is Space Jam a bad movie? How did it end up on our list? Does Nick hate joy? All of these questions are definitely asked in this episode of Reel Bad as we continue our descent into kids' movies.

We continue our descent into the madness of bad children's films with Mac and Me, as Nick, Bill, Sam, and Valerie discuss a direct rip-off of E.T., one of the greatest films ever made. Surprise! It's not as good. But... is it as bad as its reputation? Have a listen and find out!

We're back, baby! This month, we're really asking for it: we're doing nothing but "Children's Films." Woohoo. We begin with The Cat in the Hat, a film that brings a reputation as one of the worst kids' movies ever made, but does it deserve this reputation? Have a listen as Nick, Matt, Rachel, and Bill discuss this Mike Myers film.

It's our final Reel Badmas movie that ho-ho-hurt us REALLY bad. The most infamous Star Wars movie -- and the very first "sequel" to the paradigm-shifting original Star Wars -- is... truly something to behold. Wookies, Art Carney, Bea Arthur, and Jefferson Starship make this thing... a thing. BEHOLD! It's The Star Wars Holiday Special.

It's another muscled Christmas movie! This time, Nick, Matt, Bill, and Sam take on the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Jingle All the Way, a holiday comedy about capitalism and bad acting. Join us!

This week on Reel Bad, Nick, Matt, Sam, and Julia Maes travel back to the '90s for Santa with Muscles, a Hulk Hogan movie that feels as though the orphans in the movie wrote and directed it. By god, it's dumb.

This week on Reel Bad, Nick, Sarah Suta, Sam, and Julia Maes travel back to the 1980s for an uncomfortable romp full of Nazis, sexual violence, and Grizzly Adams. We're talking about the cult hit Elves, which has only one elf but many Nazis and some very unenthusiastic actors... except for the two who were VERY enthusiastic.
