James 1:1-4 • What If?

---------------------
James 1:1-4, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Man, James doesn’t waste any time getting to the good stuff, does he?
Truth of the matter is most people are either going through some type of trial right now or will soon.
And God has some instruction for us on how to deal with them.
Because know this team – it doesn’t matter what you go through – the most important thing is how you deal with it!
Listen, everyone faces trials and inasmuch as we have similar experiences in life, every trial is unique to the person because we are all unique and complex and have a story that is particular to us.
So, don’t judge how someone else is facing their trial!
Pray for them and encourage them that God is with them and will bring them through it. His grace is enough, amen?!
The word trials here, in the Greek is the word “peirasmos.”
Which means…
• Temptation
• A trial of man's integrity
• An enticement to sin
• Adversity
• Affliction
So, with those definitions in mind, how many are thinking “where does James get off telling us to be joyful about em?!”
Well, the answer is in verse 3, “3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
Our focus with most trials in on the trial itself.
Right? The 3 why’s…
Why Lord?
Why me?
Why now?
And I like to add a fourth…
Why not them?
Listen, James says “don’t pretend the trial doesn’t hurt, don’t act like it’s not difficult…
Instead, let your knowledge of who God is and His love for you inform your faith to start working so that you can endure and learn what God has in store for you and those you are called to influence!
Can I encourage you with something today?
The things we go through in life are never just coincidental or random, with no value for the future.
God is always up to something in our lives, and His plans for us are only good all the time,
Life is going to be even that much more difficult if we don’t learn perseverance.
So perseverance, is at least what God is up to with us.
Perseverance is our response of enduring even in the face of difficulty, because we trust God.
Romans 5:1-5, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Someone said, without trials some of us would never pray.
Well, the truth is that character, Godly character, proven, tested, tried and true character is not something you can get by reading about it.
It comes through the fire.
Gold being refined is like…
Job knew this. Job 23:10 says, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.”
Let me close with this question, “What if the plans that God has for you always included the seasons of trial and challenges that you have and will face as part of your training and preparation for the amazing future He has in store for you?”
What if?
Have a blessed day!
