He understands their religion, he understands their pride, and he understands their disagreements. When he speaks to them, he does start where they are, but he does this not by spending years studying Athenian. He simply walks around and observes, specifically the hypocrisy. These people who are so fixated on learning, have a temple to the unknown god. We can use excuses that we don't know people well enough to confront them in the gospel, but it is true for unbelievers as well that -out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.- Paul is not just quick to understand, he is also quick to confront them based on his understanding. May we learn and understand from the example of Paul.

The Jews from Thessalonica walk a hundred miles in order to stop their world from being turned upside down and once again, find people who will riot to stop the gospel. The brethren send Paul on to Athens, while Silas and Timothy remain behind. In Athens, Paul sees the idolatry everywhere and is provoked. Without others there, he still does what he has to do, -woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.- He went to the synagogue and to the marketplace. Are we provoked at the widespread rebellion to God- Are we stirred in our hearts so that we do something about it- Do we care enough for God or for the people that we will open our mouths-

Overview: On Sunday morning, the sermon will be on Acts 17-1-15, Paul and Silas come to Thessalonica where some in the synagogue are persuaded, but more devout Greeks join them. The unbelieving Jews have their normal response and being filled with envy, stir up a mob to attack them. Not finding them where they were staying, they drag out the owner of the house, Jason. The brethren send away Paul and Silas to Berea. The synagogue in Berea is made up of more noble people who searched the Scriptures daily to see if it was so. Finding that Paul and Silas were speaking truth, many believed along with Greeks and prominent women. The Jews from Thessalonica were too zealous to allow the fifty miles to stop them, so they went to Berea and stirred up trouble there as well. Again, the brethren sent Paul away to Athens, while Silas and Timothy stay in Berea. It would be easy to think that Berea would have a greater impact on the world, than Thessalonica, but Paul writes epistles to the church in Thessalonica in which he says -For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. -1Th 1-8--

Overview: Instead of mourning their imprisonment, Paul and Silas were singing praises to God as the other prisoners listened. After an earthquake that caused all of the prisoners to be miraculously freed and they do not escape, the keeper of the prison hears the gospel and believes in the Lord Jesus Christ with his household. He immediately shows signs of repentance showing kindness to the prisoners. The magistrates however just want them to go away, especially after they realized that they violated the law in the treatment of Roman citizens. They pleaded with them to leave the prison and the city. In this passage, we see what it looks like when we trust that God's power is greater than the power of the civil magistrate and that using the rules of the civil magistrate to force them to act justly is not rebellion to the avengers of God's wrath.

Overview: As Paul and Silas visited the churches in Cilicia, they are joined by Timothy who has a good reputation among the brethren. Shortly after the debate about circumcision, we see Paul having Timothy circumcised so he will be acceptable to the Jews. It gives us understanding of what Paul means when he says in 1 Corinthians that to the Jews he became as a Jew. We also see how Paul is constrained and lead by the Holy Spirit. He saw it as a good thing to preach the gospel in Asia, which it is, but God had a different plan.
