Overview: The synagogue of the freedmen stirred up trouble against Stephen, and now they brought forth false witnesses against him, just as false witnesses were brought forth against Christ. But, unlike Christ, Stephen does not stay silent as a lamb before his shearers. This week we'll start considering his defense. They say he blasphemed God and Moses, this place and the law, and that he wanted to change the customs given by Moses. Stephen's argument is effective enough that they are cut to the heart, and they just want to shut him up, so they take him out and stone him. We should consider the nature of his argument, and also his boldness to touch the things they hold dearest. They had put Moses, the law, the temple, and their customs above God. Stephen is going to point out that these other things they hold so dear weren't even present during the time of some of the fathers, but faith in God was always the primary thing. Believing his commandments manifests itself in obedience. Believing in the promises of God caused them to give up their comforts. May we demonstrate our faith by doing these things, and not manifest our faithlessness by failing to do them.
