Prosperity Under Persecution (Exodus 1:10-12) by Charles Spurgeon
Charles Haddon Spurgeon's sermon, Prosperity Under Persecution, explores the paradox that God uses affliction to strengthen and multiply His people. Drawing from Exodus 1:10-12, Spurgeon illustrates this through three main subjects: the children of Israel, the Christian church, and the individual believer.
First, Spurgeon examines Israel's bondage in Egypt. Pharaoh attempted to crush the Israelites through severe labor, hoping to diminish their numbers and spirit. However, God overruled this cruel policy, and the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they multiplied. Furthermore, this suffering served a divine purpose by making the Israelites loathe their comfortable life in Egypt, turning them away from Egyptian gods and causing them to cry out to Jehovah. This hardship was the necessary catalyst to make them willing to leave for the Promised Land. Even Pharaoh's decree to kill Hebrew male infants inadvertently placed Moses, their future deliverer, into Pharaoh's own court for his upbringing.
Second, this principle applies to the history of the Christian church. Throughout history, persecution has consistently failed to destroy the church; instead, it has fueled its expansion. Just as the early church was scattered by persecution, spreading the gospel to new regions, the Puritans were driven to America where they founded a new center for truth. Persecution acts as a winnowing fan, removing hypocrites and leaving a pure, devoted core of true believers. It also maintains a healthy separation between the church and the world, driving Christians closer to God.
Finally, Spurgeon applies this truth to individual Christians. Personal trials and opposition are designed to increase faith and strengthen conviction. Believers are encouraged to view setbacks as opportunities to redouble their efforts in service, knowing that God provides special comfort in times of deep affliction.
