  • ReFramed Episode 6 - 'Sex Education'

And we're back with Episode 6 of ReFramed, where Steph, Jason & Robyn met to chat about the past few months and analysed Sex Education.

Sex Education (can be watched on Netflix) follows an eclectic bunch of young adults as they navigate their last few years of school, sexuality, identity and more. In Season 2, we're introduced to the show's first visibly disabled character - Isaac.

You'll have to watch this ep to learn more about what the trio thought of this portrayal!

  • ReFramed Episode 5 - Jason McCurry - 'The Politician' + 'A Quiet Place'

Wow - you've made it to episode 5!

Thanks for sticking with us. You're about ready to start educating your friends and family about disability representation. Or just let us do the hard yards, and send them our way!

This episode, Jason rambles on with Robyn and Jason McCurry - a man with a variety of lived experiences of disability, who works in empowering young people with disability to create the change they hope for in the world. Yes, I know - another Jason! Let's call him Jason M.

    These 3 ReFramers chat about:

    • The Politician... Ryan Murphy's Netflix series which follows quite a diverse group of characters who battle it out for political power at an American high school. The show explores disability experiences through multiple characters, with a special mention going out to Ryan J. Haddad who plays the role of Andrew Cashman - a student with cerebral palsy.

    • A Quiet Place... This dystopian action thriller features quite a positive, realistic and nonchalant portrayal of disability. It's not overly hyped, pitied or made into inspo-porn. Plus, it's a great film and features an A-List cast. The best part? One of the main characters is played by an actress with disability. The worst part? When it was released, it actually wasn't made fully accessible to the community of people they were representing. *insert disappointed face*

  • ReFramed Episode 4 - Ming Luo - 'The Fundamentals of Caring' + 'In The Dark'

    Hey ReFramer!

You're now on episode 4, and it's time to re-introduce Robyn Lambird (they/them, she/her) to the series! Jason and Robyn chat all things inclusion, disability representation, and welcome Ming Luo (she/her) as their special guest. Ming brings an array of experiences with her, including lived experience of being blind.

The trio discuss the following media pieces:

    • The Fundamentals of Caring... Another Hollywood film that casts a non-disabled person as a character with disability. This time, though, they frame disability experiences in a much more realistic and light-hearted way. The story follows a young man with disability as he gets a new direct support person, and goes on his first road trip.

    • In The Dark... Suggested by Ming, this series is hilarious in the wrong (but so right) kind of way. The story follows a young woman (who happens to be blind), as she tries to uncover who murdered one of her friends. It's a great show, but once again, a non-disabled person is cast in the role.

  • ReFramed Episode 3 - Genevieve Clay-Smith - 'Game of Thrones' + 'Me Before You'

You're up to the third episode of 'ReFramed - Disability in Media'!

In this episode, Jason & Steph catch up with Genevieve Clay-Smith and discuss 2 very important pieces of media:

    • Game of Thrones... do we really need to explain this one? Based on the novels by George R R Martin, the crew dive into conversation around 2 main characters with disability - Tyrion Lannister & Bran Stark. And yes, there's spoilers! Queen in the North!

    • Me Before You... in Jason's own words, this one is an absolute "bin fire". Based on a novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes, it follows a young man with disability (played by the ridiculously handsome but NON-DISABLED actor, Sam Claflin) as he meets the love of his life, and then chooses to die by assisted suicide anyway. Seriously, what is with our culture of celebrating terribly ableist books and turning them into Hollywood films with huge star power!?

    • 'The Wrong Girl' - an Australian TV series starring Jessica Marais. The main character's brother is a person with disability, portrayed by a non-disabled actor.
