After Jesus's resurrection, Peter and some of the disciples return to fishing but catch nothing. Jesus appears on the shore and advises them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Miraculously, they haul in a large catch. Upon recognizing Jesus, Peter eagerly swims to shore to meet him. Jesus shares breakfast with them and asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Each time, Peter affirms his love. The chapter ends with Jesus foretelling Peter's and John's roles in the Church. As we read John's account, let's consider our own relationship to Jesus and the calling He has for our lives.

In John 20:19-31, after Jesus' resurrection, on the evening of the first day of the week, the disciples are gathered together behind locked doors out of fear. Suddenly, Jesus appears among them, despite the locked doors, and greets them with peace. He shows them his hands and side, proving his identity as the crucified and risen Lord. Thomas, one of the disciples, is not present during this encounter and expresses doubt about Jesus' resurrection until he sees and touches the wounds himself a week later when Jesus appears again, leading him to believe.

In John 20:1-18, Mary Magdalene arrives at the tomb early in the morning while it is still dark. She sees the stone has been removed from the entrance and runs to tell Peter and another disciple. They race to the tomb, find it empty, and leave, but Mary stays, weeping. Jesus appears to her, calling her by name. Overjoyed, she recognizes him and clings to him until he instructs her to go tell the disciples of his resurrection.

Roman soldiers lead Jesus, carrying his cross, to the place of crucifixion called Golgotha. They nail him to the cross alongside two others. The soldiers divide his garments and cast lots for his tunic. Standing nearby are Jesus' mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene, and the disciple John. Jesus proclaims, "It is finished," and dies. Afterwards, Joseph of Arimathea obtains permission from Pilate to take Jesus's body down. He wraps it in linen cloths with spices, and lays it in a new tomb in a garden.

In Ephesians 4:1-16, Paul encourages believers to walk in a manner worthy of their calling, striving for unity in the faith and knowledge of Christ. He urges us to utilize our diverse spiritual gifts to build up the body of Christ, attaining maturity and fullness in Him, thereby achieving the collective goal of spiritual growth and maturity. This passage emphasizes the importance of aligning actions and efforts with the shared purpose of edifying and strengthening the community of believers.

In John 19:1-16, Pilate presents Jesus, crowned with thorns and clothed in purple, to the crowd, declaring him innocent. The crowd, however, demands his crucifixion, insisting on Caesar's sovereignty. Pilate, pressured, hands Jesus over to be crucified. Despite Pilate's attempts to release him, the crowd persists, ultimately leading to Jesus' condemnation and crucifixion as the King of the Jews.

In John 18:15-40, Jesus is arrested and brought before the high priest, Annas, for questioning. Peter follows Jesus to the high priest's courtyard but denies knowing him three times out of fear. Inside, Jesus is interrogated by Annas and then sent to Caiaphas, the current high priest, for further questioning. Jesus is then brought before Pilate, the Roman governor, who questions Jesus about his kingship but finds no fault in him according to Roman law.

In John 18:1-14, Jesus, aware of his impending arrest, willingly presents himself to the authorities in the Garden of Gethsemane. Roman soldiers, along with Judas Iscariot, arrive to apprehend him. Despite the inevitable betrayal, Jesus faces his arrest with resolute determination, displaying an unwavering commitment to the unfolding events that will shape the course of his mission and ultimate sacrifice.

In John 17:20-26, Jesus prays to God, expressing his desire for unity among believers. He prays not only for the disciples present with him but also for those who will come to believe in him through their message. Jesus emphasizes the intimate relationship he shares with the Father and expresses his desire for believers to experience that same oneness. The passage concludes with Jesus declaring his intention to make known the Father's name to the world, and he prays for the love of God to be in the hearts of those who believe.

In John 17:6-19, Jesus prays to the Father, expressing gratitude for revealing His name to the disciples and for the relationship they share. He emphasizes that the disciples belong to God and acknowledges the responsibility of keeping and protecting them. Jesus prays for their unity, asking that they may be one just as He and the Father are one. He also seeks the Father's protection for the disciples from the evil one and consecrates them in the truth of God's word.
