So, what makes our life significant?

We know that work, play, community, our home, investments, and even our service can add value to our lives, but they do not define it.

Therefore, if I want my life to be significant, what underlying values or practices should I be participating in so that it is significant now and hereafter?

The Bible says that the practice of gratitude gives us a life here and after of significance.

Today we are starting a series entitled Gratitude: Living a Life of Thankfulness.

We all have different gifts, abilities, talents, interests, passions. And they can all be used to reflect Jesus back to the world around us. When we come together as a community, each doing our 'part' we become greater than the sum of those parts. We become an unstoppable force in our world.

You are a masterpiece - made in the image of God. God, the one who created this amazing world and said it was 'good'. Then went on to create you and me and call us 'very good.'

And as a masterpiece, made in God's image, we are called to serve all the other masterpieces made in God's image.

When we recognize what we are – masterpieces and when we begin to live up to this ideal by serving others the way Jesus served us, we can come together as a community that serves and ultimately transforms our world.

We are taught from an early age to be self-sufficient.

We are told to fend for ourselves as a sign of strength and maturity.

It's a preferred trait. Those who can't go it alone are viewed as weak or at least as “less capable" than those who can.

We value independence and individualism above almost everything else.

But, we weren't created to live this way.

It may feel counter-intuitive, but the truth is, we are created and called to live in community. Let me say it again, only this time let me make it more personal.

You were created and called to live in community.

Ephesians 3:20 says that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or imagine.

Most people would say that the story of Christmas begins with the announcement of the birth of a baby. And they would be right. But when they try to name that baby, they say, “His name was Jesus.” And they are wrong.

The story of Christmas, and the story of Jesus, begins with the story of John.

The story of John doesn’t actually begin with John; it begins with his father, whose name was Zechariah.
