When someone says "I'm pro-life," what do they actually mean? For many of us, it's more of an affiliation, a camp we're in, than a deep, understood conviction.
In this episode, Chris and Alissa start by defining their terms. At the very least, being pro-life means being anti-abortion, and abortion is the intentional ending of a human life. That word intentional matters. It's why a miscarriage is not an abortion. It's also why treating a mother's cancer is different from ending her baby's life: the goal is to treat both the woman and her baby as patients and keep both lives.
They also take on the hardest questions people raise, including pregnancy that results from rape, and why the answer always goes back to one question: what is in the womb? They talk about the difference between discussing an issue and sitting face to face with an image bearer who has been harmed. And they ask whether you have to address every issue to be "truly" pro-life, when life is the first human right, the one everything else is built on.
So who gets to define pro-life? Not politics, and not consensus, but Scripture. At the center is the gospel. As LIFE International president Kurt Dillinger likes to say, the most life-giving act in all of human history was Jesus' death on the cross and His resurrection. His forgiveness and healing are for everyone, including those whose story includes abortion.
