5:47 a.m. Alarm goes off. Before your feet hit the floor, you're already running the list, the bag, the email, the permission slip, the outfit, the prayer. And somewhere in there, you're supposed to get yourself together enough to walk out the door looking like you have it all under control. Sound familiar?
In this episode, Renata goes deeper into the system behind the pace and names it. The grind isn't gender-neutral. It was built around the assumption that the ideal worker has someone else handling everything at home, and it runs on the labor of women who were never meant to benefit from it. Drawing on her own story of navigating motherhood, medical hardship, and a career that spanned fashion, education, and entrepreneurship all in Brooklyn, all inside the machine, Renata connects the personal to the structural and the structural to the present moment: 600,000 Black women economically sidelined since February 2025, reproductive rights rolled back in 18 states, and maternal mortality climbing in ban states. The theory isn't abstract anymore. The receipts are in.
Building on Episode 1's introduction of Masculinity Contest Culture and Hartmann's capitalism-patriarchy framework, with new insights from Giannone's CUNY thesis on hustle culture, Economic Policy Institute data on Black women's employment losses, and reflections from Renata's book How Treasures Emerge.
Spring is doing that thing again — 65 degrees on Tuesday, 38 on Thursday, and you're carrying a puffer coat and sunglasses in the same bag. But the light is different now. Daylight saving hit, and something in the city shifted. Something in you shifted too.
In the pilot episode of A Soft New York Minute, Renata explores what it means to live intentionally in a city that rewards speed, output, and endurance — and asks why we still treat slowing down like giving up. Drawing on cross-cultural research linking fast-paced cities to both economic productivity and heart disease, the Black feminist tradition of self-care as preservation, and honest conversations with millennial and Gen X women about stress, faith, and what's actually missing from the wellness tools available to them, this episode makes the case that softness in New York isn't weakness. It's the most radical thing you can choose.
Featuring insights from Levine & Norenzayan's pace of life research, Berdahl et al. on Masculinity Contest Culture, Hartmann on capitalism and patriarchy, and Audre Lorde on self-care as political warfare.
