One of the greatest barriers to healthy relationships is unforgiveness. Forgiveness is often misunderstood as a feeling or a transaction based on someone else’s apology. However, Jesus reveals to us that forgiveness is a response to the mercy we have already received from God. Forgiveness isimmediate and unconditional, even when the other person does not apologize or change. Because we have been forgiven an unpayable debt through the cross, we are called to release the debts others owe us. As we remember the mercy of Jesus, our hearts become capable of extending mercy to others. Jesus understood how difficult forgiveness can be, so He told a story about a king, a forgiven servant, and a fellow servant to reveal God’s heart toward mercy.
