What if the very thing we have been searching for has been standing right in front of us the whole time? In John chapter 1, we find religious leaders interrogating John the Baptist, demanding to know by what authority he baptizes. They are laser-focused on identifying the coming Messiah through prophecy and procedure, yet they are completely blind to the fact that Jesus himself is standing in the crowd among them. This moment is more than a historical footnote. It is a mirror held up to our own spiritual lives. How often do we become so consumed with chasing the fulfillment of a promise that we lose sight of the Promise-Giver himself? The central lesson here is both simple and profound: when we seek Jesus first, the things that were spoken over us, freedom from addiction, restoration of family, breakthrough from financial hardship, follow naturally. We are not called to pursue the prophecy. We are called to pursue the one the prophecy is about, trusting that everything else will align in his presence.

This teaching from John 1 challenges us to reconsider the very foundation of who we are. When we receive Him, we are not becoming something new so much as being restored to something we already were. This reframing of redemption moves us away from a faith built on guilt and toward one built on identity. The sin nature is real, but it is not us -- it is something we deal with, not something we are. And when we begin to see ourselves through that lens, the way we live, the way we respond to hardship, and the way we treat others starts to shift in ways that no amount of rule-following ever could produce!
