  • RFP Podcast Episode #257 – Ultra Dad Session #65: We are not imposters
Growing up, and maybe even at times today, we all want to belong; be a part of something. We all want to love, be loved, and be accepted. When we get it, do you ever feel like we’ve earned it? We work to get somewhere and be someone and when it comes to fruition, is it questioned? Ego can be powerful, so can doubt. A great nugget from Stephen Lau in The Wisdom of Letting Go:
“An inflated ego does not solve your life problems it only increases them with more attachments. Emotion’s dependence on things, people and thoughts that make you reluctant to let go”
The Wisdom of Letting Go by Stephen Lau
Today we dig into these topics and some thoughts on how to keep moving forward, even when these feelings surface.

    How’d we get here?
The Ultra Dad’s Podcast came from an idea Cindy Shane created. Well, she planted the idea in our head after listening to the first time Bryan was on the RFP Podcast in May 2020. There have many times over the years when we speak on the phone or in person the “we should be recording this” line comes out. Well, here we are jumping in with both feet, like we tend to do, sharing with you our perspectives on life. Let’s be candid – we are not perfect, and we fail often. Our favorite term to use is “it’s not ideal” and there have been countless times we’ve uttered, “a plan is great until you are punched in the face;” – but we do laugh a lot, at ourselves and/or each other mostly 😊. All that said, there are those brief moments where things tend to fall into place and we, somehow, make it to that finish line – as ultrarunners yes, but most importantly has husbands, fathers, friends, and human beings. We wanted to share those imperfections and those incredible moments that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience together over the last 30+ years. So, sit back, grab a cold one, and hopefully this will be another time where things fall into place.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #256 – Ultra Dad Session #64: Reflections
The last few weeks have been amazingly wild, wacky, fun, full of loved ones, experiences, and a lot of work. Unfortunately, priorities shifted as you can probably tell considering it has been about 3 weeks since we’ve produced any content. This Sunday provided me with an opportunity to review some of my thoughts and notes over that time. Although, today’s podcast is a solo session, Bryan was certainly part of the inspiration here, along with many, many others – including Isabella, Alaina, Robin and a few other family and loved ones.
The basis for this today is perspective and controlling the present – which is truly the only moment in time we do have to control, as said by Thich Nhat Hanh, “The present moment is the only time which we have dominion.”
Enjoy some reflections, thoughts, and what has been running through my mind the last couple of weeks.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #255 – Ultra Dad Session #63: Surprising Sunday Shenanigans
These last couple of years have provided for unknown circumstances and created opportunities for us to be flexible, to pivot, and adjust to the unexpected. This impromptu, surprising RFP Ultra Dad’s session is brought to you by Covid…..unfortunately Bryan was chased down but since he had some more downtime we were able to get together. It was more catching up, talking about how Covid has impacted him and going back to how we’ve all been working through it. Fortunately, we have been spared and have just been inconvenienced! We also talked about the new house and home improvement plans, ultra-marathon race wrap-up, some exciting plans for a little AZ/PA part-time living, and with-it being Sunday afternoon, some libations.
During today’s recording Bryan was enjoying a New Trail Brewing Modern West Coast IPA from Williamsport, PA and Mike, again going with the Mother Road’s Tower Station IPA.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #254 – Ultra Dad Session #62: Peaceful, Patient, Progress
We had a good week with two recently, but it is a solo go with Mike today. It has been said we can have upwards to 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day. How often are we letting those thoughts control us? Most of the time. How often do we get to control our thoughts? I don’t think we have that power. Thoughts pass and most of those 60k-80k, whatever that number may be, never land. But the ones that do are those that can paralyze us. What can we do? Today’s episode gets some full transparency and emotion, but it is just one perspective that there isn’t one quick fix for things and we must stop searching for that answer; it is a process, that I am learning needs to be peaceful, patient, and consistently making forward progress.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #253 – Ultra Dad Session #61: Whoa – Two in One Week?
That is right – Bryan and I pulled it off and got in another podcast in less than a week. Yes, we were, as he put it, “scatterbrained,” and I believe we may have been a bit burnt out from the week. With both of us having to put time in on Saturday too, we did our best. At these moments however, we have to take advantage of whatever time we both have open to hit record. So we appreciate the continued love and support, and will ask forgiveness (and maybe sympathy 😊) as we put some nuggets out there. This show was more of a catch up but interesting stories shared around agriculture and farm knowledge, the moistness that is the northeast in summer, long lines to get dance recital tickets and the gratitude of being able to buy beer on Sunday mornings 😊. Sit back and enjoy folks, and speaking of beer……..
Bryan tried an Imagination for Reality IPA from a new local spot in Scott Township PA – Last Minute Brewing. He picked up that tasty brew on the way from work one day. Mike, wasn’t has creative but also grabbed a nice, hot weather thirst quencher on the way home, a solid PBR – Pabst Blue Ribbon! Don’t judge – it’s been in the 90’s here in Phoenix 😊!

  • RFP Podcast Episode #252 – Ultra Dad Session #60: Sunday Shenanigans
After several months both Bryan and I made it happen. It was however not without technical difficulties. No video this go around but we were able to get a podcast launched are grateful to be able to share it with you all. Yesterday afternoon/evening we caught up from adventures over the last few months and discussed homeownership, Abington Heights Wrestling history, Mike Tyson and maybe, just maybe through in a nugget or two of wisdom……we hope! Apologize ahead of time for the drop in silence. We were going to edit it out but left in the raw material for some more laughs with Mike talking to himself. 😊
Yes, during todays recording we did have some beverages, two of our favorites too! Bryan enjoyed Troegs Perpetual IPA & Mike had Mother Road Tower Station IPA.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #251-Ultra Dad Session #59: Obligations Responsibility Rites Privileges
A couple months ago I read Lou Holtz’ Autobiography, Wins, Losses, and Lesson: An Autobiography. There is one comment talking about the differences in players from today’s generation and those he coached years ago. He indicated that now it is more about rights and privileges rather than obligations and responsibilities. That is our subject today, another solo, and working on getting the team back together but hopefully, in the meantime, we can still pass along some lessons ourselves.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #250 – Ultra Dad Session #58: The Path of Least Resistance
Stumbled on this podcast a few weeks back and do apologize for the delay in getting another show back out to you all. We’ve referenced and spoke about Tom Bilyeu’s podcast, The Impact Theory. This one linked below with Benjamin Hardy hit me right at a critical point in making a decision.

  • RFP Podcast Episode #249 – Ultra Dad Session #57: Keep Digging
Over the weekend I was reminded of the book by Sharon Lechter & Dr. Greg Reid, Three Feet from Gold. There wasn’t something particular about the book, but I did recall the main point of not giving up; or as the title states, “keep digging.” Like most of the blog and podcast topics, they are typically about struggles and events along our personal journeys that we feel are relatable to many out there. Below we share one of the great nuggets from the book.
“Want to know the secret to success?
    “Good judgement.”
“Want to know where you get good judgement from?”
    “Experience.”
“Know where we get experience from?”
    “Bad judgement.”

  • RFP Podcast Episode #248 – Ultra Dad Session #56: Insecurities
“We all have dungeons but so many are afraid to talk about them.” – David Goggins
Over the years I’ve learned firsthand, through much failure, but also from being brave, that sharing my insecurities and vulnerabilities can be incredibly satisfying and cleansing. It can also provide another person with the permission to do the same, resulting in relentless forward progress. We dig into these a bit today – unfortunately another solo, but still working on teaming back up. Thanks to all for the continued love and support.
