Hi! Welcome to our latest episode of Remarks & Reflections, a podcast offering insights into topics that are important to the Hillbrook community and the broader worlds of education and parenting. I’m your host, Head of School Mark Silver, and I invite you to join us for what we hope are lively conversations about a whole range of ideas and issues that connect with our vision - to inspire children to achieve their dreams and reach beyond themselves to make a difference in the world.
Today’s episode is the third in our hybrid learning series in which I talk with different members of our community about life at school during the pandemic. Today I am joined by Director of Teaching & Learning Ilsa Dohmen. In her role at Hillbrook, Ilsa spends considerable time working with different teachers and cohorts. She has been at the forefront of our efforts to reimagine nearly every component of the Hillbrook experience, designing a program that provides a safe, Santa Clara County Health Department-approved in-person experience AND an engaging, distance learning program for students and families who are not able or not comfortable being back on campus.

Today’s episode is the second in a series in which I talk with different members of our community about life at school during our hybrid learning model. Today I am joined by 3rd grade teachers, Heather Stinnett and Susanna Long, as well as several of their students. Hear about the pedagogical backflips that teachers are making, as well as the growth mindsets that have been developed - and needed - by all of the members of the 3rd grade community.

In today’s episode I am joined by 8th grade Social Impact & Leadership Teachers Matt Callahan and Eden Maisel and a group of 8th graders talking about life at school during our hybrid learning model. These students have been part of Matt and Eden’s Social Impact & Leadership class for the past two-week rotation. As part of the class, the students created their own podcast that included voices of their classmates and students around the world talking about how they are managing during this current moment.

In this first episode of the 2020-21 school year, I am excited to speak with Associate Head of School Colleen Schilly and new School Counselor Genna Lyons. Colleen and Genna offer insight into helping children and families transition into a new school year. In a year unlike any other, they offer invaluable advice for helping all of us manage stress and anxiety. Genna shares a powerful metaphor from psychiatrist Dan Siegel, who encourages us to visualize ourselves floating down "a river of well being." Listen to find out more!
