Northbridge has always been a hub for food and culture - whether it was fresh food markets or the restaurants and pubs.

So whether you remember popping out for a Italian continental roll at lunch or a Sunday Morning dim sum, Northbridge has many tales of food to share.

On February 20 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft.

Glenn flew over Perth as part of his mission and for the occasion, many Perth residents turned on their lights overnight - the hope it would be visible in the dark from space.

The city became known worldwide by the nickname the “City of Lights” when John Glenn noted he could easily see it on the night-side of the Earth.

Director Damian Shepherd from the State Records Office joined Harvey to share the history around this event which put Perth in the Spotlight - quite literally.

Guinevere Hall from Typeface Books joins us on 'Remember When' to talk historical books. In this segment we feature "Stalin's Wine Cellar" by John Baker and Nick Place - the incredible story that's been dubbed the Raiders of the Lost Ark of wine and  "People of the river: lost world's of early Australia" by Grace Karskens - a landmark history of Australia's first successful settler farming area, which was on the Hawkesbury-Nepean River.

Founded in 1999 the WA Historical Cycle Club aims to bring together cyclists and collectors and fosters an interest in bicycles of historic interest. Bikes represented in members' collections range from the mid 19th century up to the present. 

Rob Frith, the Chairperson of the Club says that the club meets regularly and hosts ride days, workshops and static display exhibitions. 

We were also joined by caller Ron who told the fascinating story of how he rode on a tandem bike through the Graham Farmer Freeway for a special event for opening day.

We take a look at some of the many architectural collections at the State Library of WA with senior subject specialist John Hughes on Remember When.

Included in this discussion is the giddy rise and rapid decline of Art Deco theaters in Perth, European design in Perth, the films of Leslie Le Souef and the building of Winthrop Hall, the development of Medina and the panoramic photograph collection that can be accessed via the Libraries website.

HMAS Perth (1) a cruiser of the same class as HMAS Sydney and commissioned into the RAN in 1939 was sunk by an overwhelming Japanese force in the Sunda Strait on 1st March 1942. USS Houston was also sunk. 

More than half of the crew of 681 died in action. The survivors had to ensure appalling conditions on the Thai-Burma railway and some survived a second sinking in 1945, this time by American submarines who were unaware the transport ships carried POWs.  Some spent 6 days in the sea before being rescued.  Of the entire crew, only 1 in 3 returned to Australia.

The HMAS Perth (1) Memorial Foundation has been established to raise funds to construct a memorial which will be located with the naval cadets training unit, TS Perth, in East Fremantle.  Their aim is to complete this in time for the 80th anniversary of the sinking.

Mike Bailey, President of the HMAS Perth (1) Memorial Foundation told Harvey Deegan that it is time for a fitting permanent memorial to the ship and her crew.

Governor Kim Beazley (their Patron) will be officially opening an exhibit at the Perth Town Hall on 27th February.

In this monthly segment with military historian Graham McKenzie-Smith we look at army units that were raised in WA during the war.  This is based on Graham book ‘The Unit Guide’ which is a six volume box set with details of all 5,700 units in the World War Two Australian Army. 

Over 725,000 Australian men and women joined the Australian Army in World War Two and served in one or more of the 5,700 separate units which were formed in the AIF and AMF. As well as the infantry, armour and artillery there were engineer, forestry, farming, transport, workshop, medical, survey, dental, postal, records and war graves units, as well as butchers, bakers and leave train cooking sections.

Carolyn Atkinson from the State Records Office joined Harvey Deegan on Remember When to delve into their collection of old school records.

The State Archives holds student admission registers and cards which can be found by searching their online catalogue at www.sro.wa.gov.au. Once you locate the record you can request to view them.

The Archives also hold school journals, inspectors reports, teachers record of service cards, attendance files and even punishment books. There were regulations at the time that insisted that punishments in schools be recorded. These books included the students details, reason for the punishment and the method or rather "instrument" used. The regulations also state that “boxing of children’s ears is strictly forbidden and girls 12 years and over” were not allowed to be caned.

Robyn McSweeney, Author of "Albert Edmund Cockram King Of The Racecourse 1870-1943" joins us on Remember When to discuss the story of her great-grandfather who owned Belmont and Goodwood racecourses until his death in 1943.

Albert was the largest importer of thoroughbreds into Australia in his time and was the father of racing in Australia. He was bringing in the bloodlines from England, Ireland and France in the early 1900s.Her book takes the reader on a journey from the beginning to the building of Belmont Racecourse to the Cockram horses that scorch-ed across Australia winning Perth Cups, Sydney Cups, Epsoms and other majors. 

Robyn will be giving a talk at the Midland Historical Society on Sunday 7th February at the Midland Courthouse at 2.30pm. Afternoon tea supplied.  Gold coin donation appreciated.
