In this segment the Director of the State Records Office, Damien Shepherd joins us and gives us an insight into what the records office does and gives us a sneak peek into some of the stories we will be delving into over the coming months.

Baseball has a long history in WA with organised baseball beginning here in 1936. Baseball WA has recently developed a new archival facility and is seeking to expand its current archives. They are looking for donations/loans of items like caps, gloves, playing tops, programs and medals. The archive is intended to reflect the activities of Baseball WA in all its facets.

Lachlan Dale, the CEO of  Baseball WA joined us on "Remember When" to talk about this exciting new heritage project.

Transmission; a History of Amateur Radio in WA is a new exhibit by the Wireless Hill Museum in Melville. 

The exhibition celebrates the unique story of the VHF (Very High Frequency) Amateur Radio Club of WA, who have resided onsite at Wireless Hill Park since the 1972. Originally known as the Applecross Wireless Station, the site was formally opened in 1912, when telecommunications switched from underwater cable to the mast antenna, signaling the beginning of a new era in radio transmission and telecommunications.

The 1950's and early 60's were a great era to grow up in.  There were lots of fellow Baby Boomers to play with, clean air, clear roads to ride your bikes on, footies to kick in the street and the excitement of living in a tv free environment.  

In the new book "Fragments of a 50's Childhood" local author Ron Banks reflects on growing up in Mosman Park, which was then a mostly working class suburb.

Can you believe that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the final edition of Perth’s afternoon daily paper “Daily News”?

Barry Thornton was Deputy Editor of the Daily News and he says the staff were shattered by the news of the papers closure.  Barry wrote the editorial on the front page of the very last edition on the 11th September 1990 which he describes as a very bitter piece which had to be heavily edited by the sub editors.

The 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list has been announced with 710 recipients of awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia, 28 in the Military Divisions of the Order of Australia and 128 meritorious awards. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott was one of three Australians was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.

Well-known local real estate agent and former President of REIWA David Airey was awarded the Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the real estate industry, and to professional institutes.  David joined Harvey Deegan on ‘Remember When” to speak about his fascinating career and the honour of receiving the award saying "this takes the cake."

The City of Perth is showcasing 150 years of the Perth Town Hall through an online exhibition entitled Kuraree – The Heart of Perth or Koorari – Boorloo Koort-ak.

Running for four weeks, the innovative exhibition will explore the romance and mystique of the hall through a range of exciting stories, photos, videos, cultural collections and oral histories from Western Australians across the state.

   

The exhibition opens at 3pm on 1 June 2020 - the official 150th birthday of Perth Town Hall - via online portal kuraree.heritageperth.com.au.

Founded in 1947, the World Ship Society brings together some 1,500 members worldwide who are interested in ships, past and present. Geoff Howard, Chairman of the West Australian Branch of The World Ship Society joined us on Remember When to tell us more about the Society and also reflect on his 43 years in the Merchant navy

Peter Sewall from Main Roads has told us that there have been 53 traffic signal blackouts with 30 signals currently out and 13 of those on generators.

Brad Santos from the Weather Bureau says that we are in for a rough night tonight with the wind's still strong and squally.  Conditions should start to ease Monday morning.  Gooseberry Hill has so far recorded the strongest wind gusts of 117km/hr
