In October of 1903, several prominent and respected men in the town of Van Meter, Iowa, reported they had each encountered an 8' tall, winged creature that terrorized some of the town's residents over the course of a week. The description of the beast included having large bat-like wings, it shot bright light out of a horn on its head, and it left a horrible smell wherever it went. The creature was shot at, but the bullets had little effect on the flying beast. A group of men gathered to hunt the beast down and when two of the creatures emerged from an abandoned coal mine, they quickly disappeared back into the mine, never to be seen again.
