Why wellbeing in the workplace matters
Key Takeaways:
Wellbeing is really a state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.
A part of wellbeing is mental health. The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with enormous stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
Wellbeing in the workplace, specifically, includes a job that is challenging, rewarding, fulfills a clear need or purpose and has a support network within it. It is also feeling that you’re a part of something — a team, a common cause, or an overall sense of purpose.
A healthy and happy workforce creates a culture that increases employee retention and engagement, and that’s a huge competitive advantage for any company.
Companies must have a mutually inclusive duty of care starting from the top of the corporate ladder. Meaning that the employee has a duty of care to ensure that they’re fit for the rigors of business, and the employer has a duty of care to ensure that they are reasonable in their expectations and creating a working environment that does not preclude health or wellbeing.
Action Steps for Employers/Companies:
Prioritize wellbeing in the working world.
Ensure that you have an environment that is set up for an active day.
Set policies around email after working hours and policies around working at weekends or during holidays.
Leanne said:
“It’s toxic to every cell in your body to keep at something you’re essentially fighting against.”
“Wellbeing is going to be the way that companies differentiate.”
