According to Ephesians 4, spiritual maturity is not an individual burden, but one we all bear together. Spiritual maturity is our growth together as a body of believers. Specifically, we grow in the skill of love. Enduring, forgiving, restorative, life-giving love for one another.

Last week, we restated our desire that the Gospel of Jesus Christ be our everything — our starting line, our finish line, and what propels us. This week, we are restating our “why” related to gathering together. According to Ephesians 4, spiritual maturity is not an individual burden, but one we all bear together. Our New Home!

We’re finally here! Our new home: 5016 Summer Ave. Join us this Sunday at 10:00am for a brief service of thanksgiving as we celebrate what God has done and is doing among us and through us! Come check out the new, almost-complete space, and enjoy a MEMPOP while you’re at it! Wear something comfortable (AC will be on, but not yet at full capacity). In Philippians 3, Paul gave a strange warning. He said to “look out for the dogs.” Did he have some sort of canine phobia or was he speaking metaphorically? He then goes on to say something else sort of weird — he said that those of us who worship God by the Spirit are “the circumcision.” Why does he equate this very specific and cringeworthy surgical procedure with true Christianity? There’s a lot going on here, but when it’s all said and done, we will see that we are being given an astounding invitation into a new way of life that is true freedom and relief and transformation.

In Philippians 2:5, the Apostle Paul entreated the small group of believers in the Greek city of Philippi (aka the church there) to “have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”

He had just finished encouraging them to practice friendship in an entirely new and counterintuitive way. Rather than just surviving this life – just watching out for “you and yours” – they were to integrate themselves with other image-bearers of God, intentionally living in such a way that they were to humbly seek the betterment of others.

And while this surely requires effort, it’s not alien to those of us who believe – as though we have to reach for something outside of ourselves we don’t have. Paul said something surprising: that the mind and heart of humility are already ours in Jesus! Within us, by God’s grace, are the raw materials to live humble, other-centered lives for the glory of Jesus and the good of all people.
