Week 17: Unstoppable Kingdom - A Journey Through Acts
April 25, 2021 - Acts 6:8-8:8
This Sunday we consider Stephen’s unjust arrest (Acts 6:8-15), his sermon in which he indicted the religious leaders’ hypocrisy (Acts 7:1-53), and his martyrdom.
There’s an ancient saying in church history that the blood of the saints is the seed of the church. And, indeed, it was this grievous event that, by God’s Providence, became pivotal in the spread of the gospel: the church was scattered because of persecution, but the people preached the gospel. It’s notable that the first martyr was Stephen, a deacon and an ordinary church member. Also notable is another deacon and ordinary church member, Philip, who emerged as the leader of the movement of the gospel beyond Judea, into Samaria. Just like Jesus said in Acts 1:8 (the outline of the Book of Acts), “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
