  • #35 The Self-Sufficiency Of God (1689 2.2)
Today Coalt and Jay are back in the 1689 London Baptist Confession in Chapter 2 paragraph 2 on the self-sufficiency of God. The point is that a correct understanding of the doctrine of God -- especially the self-sufficiency of God leads us to the proper worship of God. We discuss how the self-sufficiency of God relates to other doctrines like election on one side and open theism on the other.

  • #34 2.1 1689: Attributes of God
Today Coalt and Jay dive into Chapter 2 of the London Baptist Confession -- God and the Trinity. Paragraph 1 is about the Attributes of God (https://www.the1689confession.com/1689/chapter-2) and today we cover:
What does the confession mean when it declares God to be the One True God?
God is infinite - what does that mean?
God is perfect -- why is that important?
What does it mean when we say that God is without parts or passions?
What do we mean when we say that God is free?
God is loving, gracious, and merciful.
    God is Patient to us.
What we know of God comes from the Scripture and our view of Scriptures dictates what we believe about God!

  • #33 1.8-10 1689: Trusting and Interpreting the Bible
Jay and Coalt tackle paragraphs 8-10 in the first chapter of the London Baptist Confession of Faith (https://www.the1689confession.com/). In this Episode:
Should we all learn Greek and Hebrew to get the most out of Scripture?
What about the original writings of Scripture -- do we have them?
How can we trust the Bible?
Do we see the providence of God in the preservation of Scripture?
If there are people that do not have the Scriptures in their language than Bible translation is missional not only academic.
What about Translations and paraphrases of the Bible?
What about places in the Bible that are more difficult to understand? Scripture interprets Scripture.
    A call for Christian discernment!

  • #30: Law and Gospel with Patrick Abendroth
Today we have a special guest with us on Renewalcast to help us with the law and gospel distinction -- Patrick Abendroth is serving as the senior pastor of Omaha Bible Church and he is originally from Omaha and is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. It was during his time at UNL that Pat was converted and became a Christian. Pat has earned his Masters degree from The Master's Seminary in Southern California and has served at Omaha Bible Church as Senior Pastor since 1998. Pat and his wife Molly met at UNL and were married in 1991. They have five children.

Seeing Christ exalted and lives transformed through expository preaching is the driving pastoral passion for Pat. Beyond proclaiming Christ at Omaha Bible Church, it is a pleasure for Pat to be involved in training pastors in the U.S. and abroad.

If you see Pat away from a pulpit, he will likely be either doing a flip on a wakeboard or peddling like mad training for a road race. It would be an understatement to say he enjoys both sports.

In 2016 Pat earned his doctorate from the Ligonier Academy of Biblical and Theological Studies. His doctoral project is a promotion and defense of classic federal theology.

  • #28: 1689 1.1 The Bible is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule
Jay and Coalt are getting into the 1689 Baptist Confession this week. The first paragraph is a summary chapter and we start with a little history of the confession and get into what the confession means when it says the Bible is the only Sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of faith
    and practice.

Chapter 1.1 "The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience,1 although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable; yet they are not sufficient to give that knowledge of God and His will which is necessary unto salvation.2 Therefore it pleased the Lord at sundry times and in diversified manners to reveal Himself, and to declare (that) His will unto His church;3 and afterward for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which makes the Holy Scriptures to be most necessary, those former ways of God's revealing His will unto His people being now completed.4"

    2 Rom. 1:19-21, 2:14–15; Psalm 19:1-3
    3 Heb. 1:1
    4 Prov. 22:19-21; Rom. 15:4; 2 Pet. 1:19–20

  • #26: 1689 - The Need for a Confession (Part 2)
Today on Renewalcast we discuss some early confessions and creeds and why they were needed and how the church today really isn't confessional but ought to be (at least in our mind). Confessions are greatly needed in the church today in our highly individualized culture. We also start looking more specifically at the 1689 London Baptist Confession and why we have chosen to go through this confession and not some others that are out there.
