  • When Positive Labels Help and Hurt Children

    Do positive labels help or hurt children?  We talked about how negative labels hurt children (during Episode 83).  We heard Bailey’s story of how she was labeled as too loud, too much, energetic, stupid, wild, and an outcast. 

    All of those negative labels made her feel like “a bag of crap, misunderstood, and not worthy of anything good.” 

    Well, what about positive labels?  We can still speak positive labels over our children, right? 

    This is a great question because there is a good argument for how

    positive labels can help and hurt children.  Once you listen to this episode, you’ll know where you should land on this.

    How does labeling your children hurt them? What is labeling a

    child? Is it only negative labels that affect a child or can positive labels hurt them, too?

    Maybe you were negatively labeled as a child and you know how

    that has hurt you and has stayed with you into adulthood. If you don’t want that to be repeated in your child’s life, you’ll want to tune in to this episode.


    I’m talking about the dangers negative labels have on

    children. We’ll hear Bailey’s story about how she and three others in her grade four class were told to stand up in front of the class so that everyone could call them “outcasts.”

  • Stop Yelling at Your Child When You Step on Lego

    If you catch yourself shouting at your kids because you stepped on Lego again even after you told them ten times to clean them up, here’s how you can try again this time not yelling at them.

     

    We give our children the chance to try again when they throw a temper tantrum, meltdown, or disrespect you or a sibling.  We let them try again to teach them how to respond in a better way.

    Sometimes, Mama, we need to give ourselves a chance to try again when we don’t respond in the best way either.

    So each Monday, I’m sharing what you probably think or say, or how you probably respond that once it’s out, it makes you cringe with “That wasn’t so nice.  I should really apologize” even if you feel frustrated, annoyed, or impatient.
