The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and other bodily functions by producing and releasing thyroid hormones. These hormones, primarily triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), control energy levels, body temperature, heart rate, and overall metabolism. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, which helps regulate calcium levels in the blood and bone health.

Thyroid conditions are broadly categorized into hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Additionally, thyroid nodules and thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) are also significant thyroid-related conditions.  

1. Hyperthyroidism:
Definition: .
The thyroid gland produces and releases more thyroid hormones than the body needs, leading to a sped-up metabolism. 
Causes: .
Graves’ disease (an autoimmune condition), thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, and excess iodine intake are common causes. 
Symptoms: .
Rapid heartbeat, unintentional weight loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, insomnia, and bulging eyes (exophthalmos) are some common signs, according to MedlinePlus (.gov). 
Complications: .
If left untreated, hyperthyroidism can lead to heart problems, bone loss (osteoporosis), and eye problems, says Healthdirect.  

2. Hypothyroidism:
Definition: .
The thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, causing a slowed metabolism. 
Causes: .
Hashimoto’s disease (an autoimmune condition that causes thyroid inflammation), and damage to the thyroid gland are common causes. 
Symptoms: .
Fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, hair loss, and “brain fog” are some common symptoms, according to Brown University Health.  Complications: . Untreated hypothyroidism can lead to heart disease, enlarged thyroid (goiter), and pregnancy complications, reports the NHS.  

3. Other Thyroid Conditions:
Thyroid Nodules:
These are lumps on the thyroid gland, and they can be benign or cancerous. 
Thyroiditis:
Inflammation of the thyroid gland can lead to both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a common type of thyroiditis and a chronic, autoimmune disease. 
Goiter:
An enlarged thyroid gland, which can cause swallowing and breathing problems.
