The Composition Studio in the Department of Music is a highly vibrant and active member of the University of Delaware academic community. UD Computational Science Day 2006 brought together more than 100 scientists, engineers and mathematicians from 15 UD departments to discuss computational modeling, methods, hardware, software and IT infrastructure. The keynote address, delivered by Dr. Jill Matzke, Silicon Graphics Inc., illustrated three key trends: increasing scale and multidisciplinary aspects of programs; a tsunami of data; and the national strategic importance of high-performance computing. Norman Wagner, Alvin B. and Julia O. Stiles Professor of Chemical Engineering, delivers his inaugural lecture as a named professor. The lecture, "Colloids and Polymers: Nanostructured Materials and Some Applications in Nanotechnology," highlights Wagner's research in the field. He works in the areas of rheology, complex fluids, nanotechnology and particle technology and leads a research effort in modeling nanostructured materials by molecular modeling. Wagner, who earned his doctoral degree at Princeton University, was a National Science Foundation/NATO postdoctoral fellow in Germany and a director's postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Lab before joining the UD faculty in 1991. In 2002, he received the Siple Award from the U.S. Army for his development of shear thickening fluids, liquids that harden instantly on impact and have potential uses in such materials as military body armor.

The University of Delaware’s new Research Vessel Hugh R. Sharp has made its way from the Pacific Northwest to Delaware, completing the last leg of the journey early Wednesday morning, Jananuary 11, 2006 as it reached UD’s Lewes campus berth in preparation for outfitting with the latest in leading edge scientific equipment.

The 120-foot research vessel Cape Henlopen is the flagship of the University of Delaware. It provides a floating laboratory for a variety of research in the Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and other waters along the East Coast. Christened in 1976, the ship has provided admirable service to the marine research community and will be replaced in 2006 with a new, 140-foot, state-of-the-art ship.
