"Apart from me, you can do nothing." That's Jesus' answer to our best attempts at being "good people" (John 15:5). 

Did you ever hear the old saying about fish and houseguests?  Both should be thrown out after three days.

Life just happens.  The good.  The bad.  Yes, the ugly, too.

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in him, but... he will pursue his foes into darkness.  Nahum 1:7-8

When things go wrong, what's your first thought? God let you down?  You're under attack? 

Not a single one of our human parents were perfect.  So we get into trouble when we think about God as some sort of cosmic parent.

When you were a kid, did your mother ever say to you, wait until your father gets home?!

Have you had a slice of humble pie lately?  “Swallowing your own pride seldom leads to indigestion,” said an unknown pundit.     

There is no dependence that can be sure but a dependence upon oneself," wrote English poet John Gay.  Was he right?

Think you know what God expects of you?  Maybe you do, but maybe you don't!
