In this episode, Julie dives into Step One of the 12-Step program: admitting powerlessness over food. She shares her personal journey of overcoming food addiction, losing 90 pounds, and maintaining her weight loss for over 16 years. Julie reflects on how discovering Overeaters Anonymous and the story of Bill W. helped her recognize the parallels between binge eating and alcoholism, especially with modern processed foods designed to foster addiction.
Julie discusses the importance of addressing the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of food addiction. Key takeaways include identifying binge foods through a personalized traffic-light system, recognizing emotional triggers like HALT (hunger, anger, loneliness, tiredness), and seeking support through community and faith. She highlights Bible verses, such as Romans 7:18 and Romans 12:1-2, as encouragement to renew the mind and treat the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Moderation is often a slippery slope for those with food addictions, making abstinence a critical part of recovery. Julie offers hope through the 12-Step program, emphasizing the freedom found in surrendering to God and taking proactive daily steps. In this episode, Tony and I reflect on how negative self-talk can impact our mental health, self-esteem, and even our eating habits. We talk about how easy it is to fall into a pattern of being overly harsh on ourselves, questioning our worth, and feeling like we're not good enough. Instead of letting these negative thoughts define us, we want to encourage you to focus on the truth of who we are in Christ, and emphasize that we are loved and valuable in God's eyes.
We also talk about how these negative thoughts can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as overeating or giving up on our goals. I share my experience with the cycle of dieting and bingeing, where feelings of guilt and shame often make things worse. We emphasized the importance of replacing those harmful thoughts with positive, biblical truths, reminding us that we're not defined by our failures but by God's love and forgiveness. We also offer practical advice on how to break free from a defeatist mindset and align our thoughts with God's Word for strength and resilience.
Finally, the episode touches on the role of scripture in renewing our minds and combating negativity. We discuss Bible verses that remind us of our worth and God's power to help us overcome struggles, including overeating. By focusing on God's promises and choosing to trust in His strength, we believe we can all experience lasting change and growth. We encourage people everywhere to embrace God's truth and find peace in the knowledge that we are precious in His sight, capable of overcoming any challenge with His help.
In this episode of the Reshape and Recover Podcast, Tony and I explore the transformative power of renewing your mind through Scripture as a foundational step in overcoming food addiction and embracing a healthier life. We emphasize the importance of not conforming to harmful habits and instead embracing God’s design for physical and spiritual well-being. Through Romans 12:2, we encourage listeners to lean into prayer, meditation, and research to make healthier choices while honoring the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Our discussion highlights the addictive nature of processed foods and the deceptive tactics of the food industry that make breaking free from binge eating a challenge. Tony and I liken food addiction to other forms of addiction, stressing the necessity of abstaining from binge foods and replacing them with nourishing, whole foods. We offer practical advice, such as committing to a 21-day habit-forming period, visualizing success, and replacing lies with truth—especially the lie that “just one” indulgence won’t hurt.
In this episode, I share personal insights, including my journey of losing 90 pounds and maintaining that for over 16 years. She acknowledges the challenges but also the blessings of support, faith, and the 12-step recovery process. We invite you to join Reshape and Recover, where we provide Christ-centered coaching to help you overcome food addiction and achieve lasting transformation.
This podcast delves into the challenges of emotional eating, offering practical tips and faith-centered strategies to overcome it. Emotional eating often stems from various emotions like sadness, anxiety, or even happiness, leading to a habitual reliance on food for comfort. The episode highlights the importance of starting each day with prayer, planning meals, and staying connected with an accountability partner or group. These foundational steps help create a structure to resist emotional impulses and align daily actions with healthier habits.
The podcast emphasizes the role of spiritual growth in combating emotional eating. Following the 12 steps, especially Step 10, which involves daily reflection on thoughts, actions, and amends, plays a crucial role. Tools like a food and step journal can aid in this process, allowing for gratitude, devotion, and evening self-review. The journal also encourages replacing shortcomings with the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5, fostering qualities like love, patience, and self-control. This spiritual approach, rooted in God’s guidance, builds inner strength and resilience against cravings.
Practical advice includes planning meals in advance, shopping smartly, and avoiding trigger foods like sugar, fried foods, and heavily processed items. The podcast suggests sticking to whole foods found around the edges of grocery stores and being diligent in reading labels to avoid hidden additives. By reducing reliance on addictive ingredients, listeners can develop healthier patterns and take control of their eating habits.
Ultimately, the episode ties emotional eating to spiritual fulfillment, encouraging listeners to seek God’s love and direction in all aspects of their lives. Through consistent prayer, thoughtful meal planning, and accountability, individuals can break free from the cycle of emotional eating and build a balanced, nourishing relationship with food.
Why the 12 Steps? Why not just do another diet? I’ve been on so many diets and many of them worked, but none of them worked long-term because I always went back to my normal eating pattern after the diet was done. I was addicted to sugar and processed foods and couldn’t stop eating them once I started. If you’re like me, you need a long-term solution. That’s why the 12 Steps works so well!
In this podcast episode, I emphasize the significance of the 12-step approach in overcoming food addiction, contrasting it with dieting, which often leads to temporary success and eventual relapse due to intense cravings. Drawing from my personal experience and various reputable sources, I explain how addiction alters brain functions, making self-control difficult, much like substance addictions. I highlight how organizations like Overeaters Anonymous, as well as insights from Psychology Today and the National Eating Disorders Association, stress the importance of honesty, self-reflection, and seeking spiritual guidance in recovery.
I share my 16-year journey of maintaining a 90-pound weight loss through the 12 steps and my reliance on God. I emphasize the importance of recognizing sugar and chemical additives as addictive and advocate for limiting sugar intake. Finally, I connect this with biblical teachings, acknowledging the need for God’s help in overcoming the compulsion to overeat. I invite listeners to explore recipes and tips on my website, Reshape and Recover.
In this episode, we explore the theme of hope and trust in the Lord, especially as it relates to overcoming struggles with healthy eating and lifestyle choices. It’s easy to feel hopeless after setbacks, but Scripture reminds us of God’s presence and guidance through every challenge.
We begin with a reading from Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, which encourages focusing on God’s presence even when the path ahead seems unclear. This leads to a reflection on trusting God with our eating habits and life’s uncertainties. Bible verses like Psalm 25:4-5 and Proverbs 3:5-6 remind us to seek His guidance, trust His plans, and submit to His will for a straighter path.
We also discuss how life’s hardships—like divorce, loss, or change—can shake our hope. However, trusting God through these trials can reveal unexpected blessings. Personal stories highlight how digging into God’s Word and leaning on His promises can bring peace and restoration.
The episode also addresses practical ways to overcome unhealthy food habits, focusing on the power of community, accountability, and prayer. Food may temporarily comfort, but it cannot truly solve problems. By turning to God and supportive relationships, we can break free from harmful cycles and find lasting hope and joy.
Scriptures like Romans 15:13, Isaiah 26:3-4, and Psalm 56:3 inspire us to keep our eyes on Jesus, even in the storms of life. With faith, support, and trust in His unfailing love, we can navigate life’s challenges and embrace God’s perfect peace.

Prayer, planning, and accountability are the cornerstones of success, helping you resist temptations and remain focused on your journey.
We also dive into common pitfalls like high-fat foods, sugary sauces, and pressure from "food pushers." Learn how to graciously say no, avoid triggers like processed foods, and lean on Scripture for strength and guidance. Verses like 1 Corinthians 10:13 remind us that God provides a way out of temptation, while Galatians 5 encourages us to cultivate the fruits of the Spirit, including self-control. With tips for handling tricky social situations and staying prepared, this episode equips you with the tools to maintain your abstinence and enjoy the holidays without guilt.

In this episode, we explore the crucial role of acceptance in the journey to freedom from food addiction and overeating. Embracing acceptance isn’t about giving in; it's about surrendering control and trusting in God. We discuss how acceptance can be a powerful tool for overcoming the fear and shame often tied to food addiction and why, in a Christ-centered recovery, it’s essential to rely on God’s grace and guidance as we learn to let go of self-judgment.
Drawing from the experiences of those in recovery, we examine how acceptance provides a foundation for healing. When we accept our limitations and recognize that we don’t have to navigate the journey alone, we find a deeper level of peace. This surrender allows us to focus on the steps forward instead of getting stuck in cycles of guilt or regret. By embracing acceptance, we can work toward abstinence without feeling overwhelmed by perfectionism or pressure.
We also delve into practical ways to cultivate acceptance daily—through prayer, mindful reflection, and connecting with a supportive faith-based community. The episode closes with a reminder that God’s love for us remains constant, regardless of our setbacks, and encourages listeners to seek His strength as they walk the path of recovery.
